Assembling my differential

With my car just weeks away from the paint booth, I need to make it mobile. I started assembly of the rear-end today. It's a Currie 9" housing with a Nodular center section, 31 spline Detroit Locker, 3.50 gears, and Daytona pinion support. Should be pretty stout. My only concern was that all the splined studs didn't pull through equally when I tightened the lock nuts to 40 ft-lbs. I know the center section is seated flush on the housing, so it's probably no big deal...but it bugs the shart out of me. Anybody else seen this?

Maybe if you loosen and repeat a few times they'll pull through some more. Did you try torquing to the high end of the spec? Then back off and torque to the middle.

I never used a torque specification on the differential casing to housing nuts. I used a socket wrench and tightened by feel. No leaks or problems so far and I drive the '66 almost daily since swapping over to 9" rear about 4-5 months ago.

Thanks Frank, that is exactly what I'm going to try. I called Currie tech support and he said I could put as much as 65 ft-lbs on those studs, so I'll put some pressure on them in hope that they pull through. If they don't pull through at 65ft-lbs, then I'll consider them seated in the splines just fine.

I loosened and re-tightened the nuts several times to try and pull the splines through with no luck, even up to 65 ft-lbs. They should be fine, and are obviously tight. Put the axles in and disc brake brackets. I might have to re-clock the brackets depending on where the calipers fit best. For the time being, I put them at the rear. More pics:

looks awesome. I will be happy If I can get my diff when I get my hands on it to look at least that good...almost a shame to see it underneath the beast...

Ryan,
I would just make sure its seated all the way and call it good...I have seen them get hung up on the studs before. There really isnt a ton of wiggle room.
