Deb and I took a two week vacation to Greece. She presented at a world conference (some egghead boring stuff) in Athens. We spent one week in Athens and the second week on the island of Samos. Her great grandfather was born and lived on Samos and then immigrated to the U.S. while in his early twenties.
Athens was a spectacular place if you like old history, lots of people and small spaces! It was crazy to see all lanes of cars packed with the motorcycles using "lanes" between the cars. You drive in Greece and you best be paying attention all around you.
It was very cool being in a place with "real" history behind it. Walking around, seeing the sights and realizing that 2,500 to 6,000 years ago, people were just going about their daily routine in the same places, just blew my mind.
Samos was like night and day to Athens. Few people, big island and only twisty roads that went on forever. We hiked around the island, saw the sights, ate some really good food and found the Greek people to be some of the nicest I've ever met. I thought the language barrier would cause problems, but most folks knew just enough English that we were able to get across what we wanted. Crystal clear water, great beaches, magnificent mountains...Samos really was an island paradise.
If you like the history of man and can swing it, a trip to Greece (Athens and almost any island) is highly recommended.
