bait car

guruatbol

Always on vacation!
Anyone watch bait car? I have been watching it and it is so much fun. The cops place a car out that is set up with the ability to film the thief and shut down the car and lock the doors.

They watch it and when the thief gets in it and drives off, they shut it down and roll up with the marked units and arrest the scum bag.

The comments of the thieves while they are taking the car and when they are arrested is priceless.

The stories they come up with.... :lol

It's pretty frickin' hilarious that they play stupid (ok maybe they're not playing) after getting caught and the stories they come up with. Don't they think that the cops have heard them all before?

As much as I hate reality tv, I actuall watch Cheaters and Bait Car. I watch Cheaters just for the chick fights, but both shows are good for a chuckle ot two.

NPR had an interesting story about Bait Cars. The cops left a bait car in a neighborhood, and the folks there were concerned about an abandoned car. They called it in, but the cops simply told them that they weren't interested in pursuing it. The neighbors then attempted to find the owner, and got into the car itself (unlocked), but couldn't find any info on the owner. They then attempted to open the trunk, but couldn't get in (that's where the cops put the gear to follow the car). The stake-out cops watched all this for several days and when the neighbors attempted to break into the trunk, they were arrested. It all went to court, and these poor souls who were attempting a good deed were reamed by the justice system, which thought they were the true crooks! Finally, after six months or so of court delays and proceedings, the neighbors were declared innocent.

We have a bait team and the guys and girls that work it are good. A couple young officers have an act where they get out fighting and everything. Fantastic tool. We also have a couple teams that use it just leaving the window open and a carton of menthols on the seat.

And Mid if you have to leave a car there for days...it ain't worth it. Ther's other stuff they could be doin. JMHO

I heard the same story, Mid. This American Life :)

The police had left the doors open, keys in the car, in a low-crime neighborhood. AND there were clothes in the back seat that looked like "stripper clothes."

The couple that was involved and got arrested had let their imaginations get away with them and were SURE that some poor stripper girl had been kidnapped, taken out and dumped somewhere and that the criminal that kidnapped/raped/murdered this poor girl dumped the car on their street. And they were pretty ticked that the cops didn't care.

They were just dumb young adults who let their story take on it's own life, and were full of that "WE MUST DO SOMETHING" naivete.

They were offered certain deals but all of them required them to say they had done wrong and were remorseful, and they refused believing they had done nothing wrong.

I actually think, you know, if you find yourself crowbarring into a person's car, even with good intentions, you accept that you're breaking the law. Even if that's for a greater-good, you are still running the risk of finding yourself in the slammer. You're basically saying "It's worth going to jail for B&E to help this poor missing stripper." Well, that's wonderfully giving of you, but don't cry when you wake up next to bubba.
