Has anyone found a good alternative to using barrel nuts on the various emblems/letters/badges?

No, I've seen people use silicone to put them on.

Remove the pins on the back of the emblems entirely and glue them onto the body (and paint) using 3M Emblem Adhesive. I don't remember the exact name and part number, but any good parts store will have it. The adhesive is clear and can't be seen.
