best place to buy a T5 or have one rebuilt

Have you considered doing it yourself? I know you paint and body guys are scared of a little grease but they are not too bad to tear down.

They aren't that hard to rebuild yourself if you are up to it... The rebuild manual is available online. I got all the parts to convert to a T5Z from "the gearbox". They seemed to have the best prices and have both OEM and aftermarket parts.

If you decide to tackle it yourself, I'll come over and help...
not sure if that helps your decision or not! :confu

What trans do you have? If it's the 94-5 V8 or V6 trans, I might have a used input shaft.

ha! not scared of grease, but do have to plan a "set aside" day for greasy stuff & make a mental note to not touch anything in for paint. I just never have any luck rebuilding something mechanical. cant even get a brake caliper to work properly after rebuilding it. paint & sheetmetal is a different story (thankfully)

thanks! may take you up on that. might get a rebuild kit & a shorter input & go thru one of those 94-up trannies we opened up last summer. if I remember right, the gearsets looked good in both those. then I could do a swap out instead of having the car blown apart all over the shop. then we can open up the noisy one & see whats inside of it. would like to convert to the "z" spec with the 295 first gear, but $700 for that gearset is a little outta the pricerange right now.

thanks bill! have two of those in the shed right now. would need to change to the shorter input for the setup in the car now.

for you guys in the know, does this look like a good kit? I see there is a big price difference in aftermarket such as this & factory tremec/borg warner. ford motorsport seems to be in between at about $50 more than the kit listed. just not sure if there is a big difference in the quality of bearings etc. to warrant the price difference...

I can't say enough good things about Bruce at Modern Driveline. Anytime I have had an issue or question, they have always been very helpful. I did buy the Ford Motorsport kit, and it was very complete. I ended up buying a few upgrade parts from Modern Driveline. I do not know if they have a kit, but may be a source to look into. They do sell new T5s as well.

I'd be leary of that kit simply because they don't state the bearing manufacturer. "The Gear Box" owner was also pretty helpful to me when sorting through both the T5 and M21 rebuilds. It looks like he also carries a variety of rebuild kits with various bearings not shown in the eBay kit.

Also, be sure to upgrade to a steel front bearing retainer for smoother throwout bearing movement and also an billet aluminum cluster gear bearing retainer as opposed to the original stamped steel retainer.

ok, more questions....

did a little more research & according to modern driveline & a good racer friend in fl, the noises I hear in 1st thru 3rd are due to severely worn input & cluster assembly. per "the gear box" a new gearset plus a rebuild kit will run close to $850 which, with current "life" situations, I don't have that much to drop right now. I've got two of the 94-up t5's that craig & I cracked open last summer that looked good inside. should I just pick up a shorter pre-94 input & stick one of those in the car for now? when play funds are back up, I can then go thru the "whiny" trans & install a 2.95 gearset , rebuild it then swap them out when time permits.

I think I may crack one of these other ones back open & give it a better inspection before I go to the trouble of swapping it out. anything I should really look for other than wear patterns on the gears? i'm just to my breaking point on this thing. I've owned it for 5 yrs & driven it maybe 100 miles. between the fire, flood, surgeries etc going on each summer, it seems that I never can get upgrades finished to the point of being able to drive it. if I don't get some enjoyment out of it soon, it will be for sale...

They are easy enough to rebuild that I don't think it would be an issue to try. You don't have anything to lose. PM me if you need a used short input / cluster. I should have two sets and don't mind giving up one if you need it.

thanks! i'll let you know what I decide to do when I rebuild the one in the car now. thinking seriously that in the long run, I might be better off with the 2.95 gearset. I have 3.73's in the rear, so might get a little more use out of first gear with the taller ratio.

I dug this one out of the shed today & cleaned it up. its out of a 94-97 v6 (tag #238) so maybe hasn't been beat on like the one in the car now. it feels tight with no endplay on the input or output, so will open it up tomorrow & look at the guts a little closer than we did last summer. if it looks good i'll get a short input & a new steel bearing retainer & put it in the car for now so I can drive it some.

opened this up today & the insides look brand new. still see all the machine marks on the gear teeth faces. only wear at all that I can see is ironically on the input gear. not really wear but you can see the polished areas where the gears mesh but that's centered & within specs according to the manual. also checked the magnet in the case & its pretty clean. only a few small particles on there & no major chips /chunks I think i'm going to chance this one & get a new short input shaft, bearing retainer & change the speedo drive gear to a 6 tooth & eliminate that problem while i'm at it.

anything else I should do while i'm at it? i'm not going to ride it hard if this tranny works, so will save the major upgrades for the rebuild on the one coming out. hoping this one is good so I can ride this summer & i'll use it in the triumph at a later date.

Probably not necessary for how you are going to use it, but the billet cluster gear bearing support would be an easy ($53) upgrade since you are going to have the tail housing off.

that's on the "to do" list for the tranny I will rebuild.

ordered a kit with a new pre 94 input shaft, new bearings & a new steel retainer, & a 6 tooth speedo drive gear. hoping this tranny will be noise free & work for a little while....

Well im jealous! lol Parts laying around all over. Good luck with that setup. If you need an extra pair of hands let me know. I might not know what im doing but i can hold stuff up for ya or hand you tools lol

Anyone know if the dealers or any chain stores like napa still carry the input shaft bearing shims ? I've got a .010, .040 & a .050. The .040 takes the end play out of the shaft, but i can feel a little preload with the input being a little hard to spin. The .010 still leaves alot of endplay so is too thin. I probably need something or some combination around .025-.030. Just hate to have to order & wait another week for those to show up...
