Bicycle Question

Im looking at buying a new pedal bike. I've used the same 10 speed since my teens. Its done well for me, but its time for something new. Im not really concerned about a mountain bike, as most of my riding will be black top related, but i would like to be able to use a somewhat aggressive tire for some grass and dirt trails. Im not really into bikes, so i dont want to spend a ton of money either. The last time i got one new, i remember just sizing them by the size of the tires. Now it seems its by the seat post. Is it just the feel of it, or is there a proper way to size the bike you need? Whats the deal with the front shocks? Are they actually necessary?

You might pm Cmayna......he has old pics of him and bikes so might know something....lol

My requirements were just like yours. About 4 years ago I bought a Specialized Expedition Sport (it's a hybrid--cross between a road and mountain bike). I primarily just use it to bike to work and back and it's fine for me. The hybrid bikes allow a more upright seating position, which is good for me. The price was about $350, plus any accessories you may need. I had to replace the saddle after one year under warranty, then after another year I bought a better one. I also had to replace the pedals after not too long, not a big deal.

Thanks Frank, i've been looking at a local sporting goods store. I like going to the mom and pop shops whenever i can. No real bike shop around without a pretty good drive.

shocks on a bike in the $300 or less range are designed for marketing instead of function.

good shocks are worth it on the mountain bike trails. they aren't worth anything on a dirt road. for your app, they just add weight.

there are lots of factors involved with sizing a bike. intended use is just one example.

given your budget, you will have to find an old used bike or head to walmart.

good luck in your search.
