Big Brakes & Big Bearings

I have my 9" reaend out of my 66. I hear everyone saying to get the Bigger brakes & Bearing rear end. I will post a few pictures do I have the Bigger brake & bigger bearing rearend.

do I have a big bearing brake rearend? The one picture shows a number on the backing plate if that can help.
 
Looks to me like the smaller bearings and brakes but it has been a while since I compared them.
 
Thank you vey much..Looks like Im have th small bearing rear end... So the brakes must be small normal shoe size also.When I buy wheel cylinders for the back they would be for the small block or the big block.Is there a number on the cylinder its self.Thank you for you info..
 
The cylinder would be based on the size of the drum diameter/brake shoe width......if there is any difference in them at all.
 
Thanks Pete. I have measured the back drums and they are 11/ 11/16 wide. Inside where the pads brake against is 10 3/8s.. The rear brakes are two inches wide.I have looked on the mustang plus site and could not find a cylinder that would work. Am I looking in the wrong places.. Do I need to post a picture of the rear brake drum...
 
I believe the drum size ( or max turning size) is cast into the outer surface, near the outer edge. I can pull one of mine if you need me to. I have an original '66 K code 9".
 
I can't tell what you have from your pictures.

The easyu way to tell big bearing vs small bearing is if you have a tapered axle housing then you have small bearings and if your axle housing does not have a taper you have the large bearing.

Then you need to find out if you have early big bearing or late big bearing ends.
 
Thanks Guys. I will go out later and check the drum to see if I can find any numbers on them. Should each side have a diffrent number?Again I thank you for your time.

One of the photos it has a number of F 11 1/2 YOU CAN BARELY MAKE OUT THE 1 MAYBE A 2. WHAT DO YOU THINK.
 
Try this.....take one rear cylinder out and disassemble it. Clean it up and take it in to a local parts store. Ask to compare it to their new ones. Let them ask the questions to match it up. Main concern is housing size and bore size. Once you find the correct match....see what it is for. Then, if the local brand is not one you want, take the info and tell them you will have to see how many you need before you buy.... I have done this in the past....even to the point of telling them I do not like their brand. No problems.
 
Before I take it to auto zone or shucks auto I took it to a friends and he put his calipers to it and came up with .880 inside diameter. Sorry but what is that number in inches.
 
Is the 9" rear in the car the original?

66 with 9" rear should have had 10x1 3/4" brakes with wheel cylinders either 29/32" (.906) or more likely 15/16" (.938).

Since your shoes are 2" wide and the wheel cylinder is 7/8" (.875), you may have a 9" out of a 67-70 or later that came standard with 10x2" brakes and 7/8" wheel cylinders.

Grab a wheel cylinder and set of brake shoes and go to your local parts store and ask for brakes for a 69 Mustang with a 351 in it. That should come back with the matching shoes and wheel cylinder. I think that will work for you.

No it is not the original. Back in the day I replaced it with I think a 69 or 70 9" out of a mach1 that I had shortened to stock 66 length by Aldredge motor sports out of portland oregon..Again I thank you and pete and pprince for your time and Info. I will do what you guys have said about going down and having them look at them and have them find the right cylinder. Should I get the biggest cylinder I can that will sill bolt up to the backing plate? Again thanks.

I would get the one that is designed for it...if there is an option for a larger wheel cyl, you may want to verify what master cyl. it takes. You would have to move more brake fluid with a larger than original wheel cylinder. Could make you have pedal issues.
