There is questions an what species of cat this is. It has cougar (body shape and no spots) and bobcat (short tail) features. There are known cross between the two. So I am going with mostly cougar.

So in Texas:

There is currently an open season on cougars in Texas. Texas Parks & Wildlife do not have population estimates and rely on sighting, whether verified and unverified. The state claims that the population of cougars in Texas is steadily increasing, despite the loss of habitat and fragmentation that is occurring throughout the state.

Bobcat falls under fur-bearing animal: (as defined in § 71.001, Parks and Wildlife Code) License or permit required to take, trap, possess or sell the animal or its pelt.
Beaver, ring-tailed cats, otters, opossums, red and gray foxes, badgers, mink, skunks, or civet cats, nutria, raccoons, muskrats, weasels

Also Special Rules
...
Bobcat - only pelts and mounts regulated.

When I first saw the picture I thought young cougar but after a second look it could be a large bobcat, I guess. My initial question was in reference to cougars as I thought they were protected pretty much everywhere. I would hate to see one killed. I hate house cats but the big varieties I find very cool.

It varies state to state. Although cool, this one is coming up to the back of the neighbors house. It has gotten to bold and has to be eliminated. The game warden has no interest in trapping it (we asked first).
