body work and paint cost

i got some bad news when the guy thats doing my body work came to look at my car. he said i needed a new hood after i spent 4 hours stripping it down but then he totally redeemed his self by telling me it was only going to cost me $500 for all the work. i have to supply the material and it may take us 3 months to work around his schedule. hes a family friend and is working on it when he has time. we will have to cover every panel completely and then block it out. did i get a good price???

Um, yeah, that's a ridiculously low price. I know some pretty cheap body men, but $500 isn't even on the charts.

Keep in mind that your materials bill will likely be twice that amount.

You're going to get screwed @ $500. That's an impossibly cheap price, even cheaper than most of the crooked ex-con moonlighters doing it in their garage...and those guys would *** you over too.
Here are some of my thoughts on the matter:

I've seen a FEW decent paint jobs that were done at a decent price (ie. $4k), most of them either don't come out right or don't last 6 months. The guys that are really pros usually charge $10k plus, but at least you GET something for your $$.

There is a reason I'm painting my own car and it sure ain't because I'm good at it....

I would be a bit leery of it but......when you say he is a family friend and doing it when he has time, it might be ok. I would ask him why so low compared to what you have heard of. Is it at a shop or his house? If at a shop, how does the owner feel about the setup?

I want to clarify that the $500 isn't just the cost to buy and finish the hood. I agree with the rest of the guys about the overall price. I spent almost 20 times that to have my car painted and I did all the metal work before it went there.

I'm pretty sure I dropped more than that on sandpaper, blocks, de-greaser, masking, etc. Heck, paint itself was three times that figure.

I need a better family and/or friends!

I was thinking the same thing and actually started my initial post out saying that before I edited it out. I know for a fact that I've got at least a couple hundred tied up in various sandpapers and the prices of the finer grits..... 2000 and up...... have skyrocketed!

the guy does a really good job... i have no doubt in his ability he does 3-5 vehicles a year on the side.... he did a 78 bronco for my dad 15 years ago and it still looked good 4 years later when he sold it... all of the work will be done in my shop with all of my tools... and since hes doing it on his on time, he said we'd be lucky to get it done by summer... im waiting on new headlight bucket but ill definately post pics when we get started and our process.

Just so you know how good a friend this guy is, he's working for less than $5 an hour. Better have a steady supply of beer on hand.

Be prepared to spend upwards of $1500-2000 on paint and sandpaper alone, plus any other sheetmetal you find that needs replaced.

body work has started... i understand a little better why its so cheap... im doing the work and he comes behind me and tells me where to sand, where to add, and what to do next.... he sands a little, smears a little.... either way its cheaper than someone else and i get to learn the process.... something i wanted to do anyway and i dont have to go school

It sounds like your buddy is really taking care of you then.

Give a man a fish and he can eat. Teach a man how to fish and he can eat forever.

Hey Dave, some times you feel like catching and frying them up yourself, other times you feel like going to a good restaurant.

Are you asking me out on a date? Do I have to eat fish? Can I get a steak instead?
