Bolt in vs Clamp in Radiator

DILLIGARA?

Looking at this pic, am I looking for a bolt in or clamp in radiator? WTF is the difference?

All I know is that the opening is 24" wide and I want a staggered outlet radiator.

First off, there is no radiator there so stop looking.....

Now, I believe your radiator was a clamp in....a set of brackets top and a set of saddles on the bottom that the radiator sits in. A bolt in normally has bolt two bolt holes on the sides, about 8 inches apart......... You daughters car should be a bolt in.

I agree yours looks like a clamp in.

More to the point, with that hot 351, you'll need the extra cooling & width from the clamp in, which is wider, but about the same depth.

The holes are in place for either a bolt or clamp in radiator. There are four holes one the corners of the opening where a bolt it radiator would bolt. You can use the larger radiator and use the "clamps" the upper clamp utilizes the middle two bolt holes on the hood latch support bracket and the lower clamps utilize two holes in the strut brace brackets. There are two panels that bolt on with the radiator to fill the void space on the sides, I have a set if you need them... Powdercoated black

What's interesting is that I after looking at the radiators in Mustangs Plus catalog, I might have a clamp in style in my daughters car which has 4 rows and the staggered outlet. Being that I'm going 24" with 4 row in Shag, my choices of stock looking radiators seems to be clamp in style.

Rick, I'll let you know as soon as I get the radiator.

Thanks for the input.

From that pic, I would say Bolt in. The rad support has only 2 holes in the top center area.
I dont see the extra holes for the top clamp bolts, just the hood latch support holes.
Plus the lack of holes in the lower strut supports for the lower 2 saddles are missing.
So bolting it in the 4 corners seems likely.

There are actually 5 holes, the two craig has open are for the upper bracket, the clips go on the radiator bracket, he already has 3 of the C clips on the radiator support. The '68 saddles are on the side of the strut channel, '67 are on top. My '68 was bolt, but I was able to use clamp in without cutting any holes. You can see the 5 bolts in these pics.

Rick is correct, I had a bolt in as original equipment in my car but when I put the 429 in it I converted to the clamp-in and bought a 4 row radiator for a 428. All the holes are there for either one. I did mine back in the 90's when there were no aluminum radiator options and no ebay. Had to hunt down the top clamp and saddles at junk yards. Anyway, it's all available repop now so a clamp-in aluminum radiator would be the way to go on Shag. IMHO

I sure wouldn't. You may not need the extra cooling capacity in Menlo Park, but you will on the way to Knott's, going down I-5, and you'll definitely need it in L.A., sitting in traffic.

I'd go with the biggest aluminum radiator you can shove in there. I would stay away from the Griffin radiators, though ... they're over priced junk.

I purchased the NPD '68 style 24" rad. 3+ row with rt. hand outlets for my stock 289 setup but this may give you an idea of fit:

I'm still debating on using up/low saddle mounts (bought the upper but not lowers) or fabbing side bolt on mounts reverse of what the stock 2" spacers were for the 20" rad. (facing out instead of in towards center) It's hard to see but the flange down the sides lines up right with the hump in the rad. support down the sides (not a flat surface to mount to) and it would put the fins against those 4 mounting holes so I'm thinking a ~1"+ wide spacer going down both sides with an offset to hold the rad. ~1/2" from the support so it won't rub. I just like the idea of it being bolted in better but know that the saddle mounts work just as well. It is just set in for the pics with a piece of ~1" wood under it for mock up.

A regular radiator , a FAN SHROUD and a clutch assy for the fan blades should be efficient enough.IMO.
The position of the fan in the fan shroud is crucial so the fan can "suck" ! ???
