Bought My Old 69 Back Today

Some of you might remember I sold my 69 Mach1 last fall. Well I bought it back today. I gave less than half of what I sold it for buying it back. The bad thing of it is no engine. The friend I sold it to missed a gear and and blew it all over the place. I mean big time. One rod out the side of the block and another came up through the valley and even broke the intake. Crank is a mess. The only thing I see that might be saved are one head and maybe the other with some work. Now I have to figure out what I want to put back in it. I am thinking about just freshening up the original 351 that came out of the car and putting it back in. That engine has been sitting since I pulled it out in 2002.

That sucks about the engine. It had one sweet setup. I think you'll be disappointed in the performance going from a 427w back to the 351w, but if you are fine with that then by all means go back stock!

I still need pics of your front coilover suspension :craz

That's great news about getting your car back!

But didn't you have another project in the works as well?

That's awesome news Gary!

I'm :pbj happy for you. I know it was a tough decision for you to sell it. Glad it came home.

Didn't know you sold it but glad it's back where it belongs. you had one of the earliest 427w motors I'm aware of. If I was going to do mine over (;408w) I would go with slightly less cam. Kind of depends on the mood. ;)

Wow I'm surprised that the trans survived a missed gear but the engine didn't. Did he end up downshifting instead of upshifting?

Very cool news! Always said when you hear a story about one that was sold and never seen again. Very rare is the story of actually buying it back.

You guys are going to have to explain this to me.

On my 5 speed, you start with 1st forward, then pull back to you for 2nd, then push forward for 3rd. I thought when guys talk about missing a gear, it would be like going for third and accidently shoving it into first, causing rpms to go through the roof.

What exactly do you mean by missing 2nd? Did he leave it in neutral and pound the gas? If he put it in 4th the engine would have just bogged down, right?

Cool that you got the car back. Sorry to hear about the engine.

But at least now you get to plan/build another one. Fun!

What I mean by missing second gear is he never got it locked into second gear and yes was basically in neutral. When I used to shift the car hard I never let off the gas pedal. Engine would go up onto the rev limiter until I let clutch back out. Well if he did it the same way by the time he got off the gas it was way to late. My guess is the engine was way past 10,000 when it let go. Like i said it was a big mess.

That would make sense why the trans survived! :lol I too thought he hit 1st instead of 3rd, which would likely bomb the trans and engine. That sucks that he was that hard on the motor, especially when you put all that hard work into getting it to where it was. I can't imagine revving past 7k rpm, let alone 10k

Had some friends stop over tonight to look at the car. We got talking and one of them said to just drop the original 351 back in the car for now. So we pulled the engine out of moth balls and thought we would fire it up before we set it in the car. Got all the valves adjusted, put starter, clutch and bellhousing on and gave it a try. The engine never turned of more than 2 turns and was running. Sounded pretty good so we started putting it back in the car. It is sitting in all hooked up but we need to put most of the bolt ons on it yet. I will work on that tomorrow. With any luck it will be running tomorrow afternoon. :vic

And that is why its always good to have a good engine in a corner somewhere in moth balls. I've rebuilt a couple engines now with no car to put them in (granted yours was the original that got pulled out), but point being, its awesome to have a car come in needing an engine and say, "hey, you know what, I happen to have just what we need for this..."

Thats awesome Gary! I'm sure it'll feel great when you get back inside the ol girl and take her for a spin again!

Wow you work fast, I always really like your car from the pics I saw of it. Congrats on getting to buy it back and put it back in your stable.
