Budget exhaust.

Hi guys, I am looking to do a somewhat budget exhaust on my 65 4speed 289.

Right now I have Long Tube Tri-Y headers with Flow Master mufflers. I have never been happy with it, leaks, and hangs to low.

So now I am looking to get some HiPo manifolds and either the Summit or pypes exhaust.

Will the HiPo Manifolds clear my stock Z-Bar?

Who sells the manifolds for the lowest price?

Any other common problems I should be aware of?

Thanks
-Jeff

Yes they will clear the Z bar.

I'd just post in the wanted adds, someone here should have a set. The Original ones can be spendy, but the repops are good and will be less. Shop around.

If you want to do it on a budget, why not cut your exhaust system and have a muffler shop weld a pipe in on each side.

I had a set on my 65 and I really saw a huge difference in performance when I took them off and put headers on it. I like the quiet, but the car seemed to just wake up when I added the headers.

I don't know if it is an option with the 4 speed / z bar, but does anyone make a good mid length header that will work with your application. The thing I've always had issues with on cheap headers was the collector gaskets blowing out all the time, but now with ball and socket configurations on quality headers, that is no longer an issue. On the head side, the 3/8 flanges are better too, but even the thinner 1/4" flanges seem to work with the multilayer aluminum gaskets.

If it's just your headers being a problem, maybe just find a better fitting long tube. I know on my chebby, the hedman headers I got are way better than the cheepo summit / dynomax headers I used before.

In the 80s I had some Hooker headers that were two piece on the driver side in order to get by the Z bar. I think this was a custom deal from the PO.

You can use shorties with a Z bar and if you use the "Buffalo" gaskets between the heads and header you will solve your leak issues. My 67 had issues with leaks on the driver's side and this type of gasket fixed it.

There are tons of choices out there, just have to decide which way to go and go for it.

You have to like your car, so don't let me tell you that you shouldn't get the HiPo manifolds, if it is what you want.

I just couldn't believe the difference when I changed mine out.

The HiPo exhaust manifolds will not clear the stock 65 z-bar, but will clear the HiPo version of the z-bar.

Contact bravenrace, a co-worker of his was selling a set of HIPO manifolds a few months ago... don't know if they sold or not...

Thanks for the info guys. I don't mind loosing some HP for the Hi-Po manifolds, I figure I will get a cleaner, more ground clearance and lower the under hood temps.

I thought I might have a problem with the stock Z-Bar, does anyone know if it is possible to mod the stock one so it will work? I don't mind cutting and relocating the arms on it if needed.

dm289; i'll try giving him a PM. Thanks for the heads up.
