Buying a vehicle out of state.

Quick question.

When buying a vehicle from a different state, what tax rate do you pay? I was always told its taxed based on the county you live in when registered, but reading online a lot of people seem to be saying its taxed wherever you buy it.

So which is it? I'm heading to Illinois tomorrow to get a new DD and just wanted to clarify.

Thanks.

Same here, drove to NC, payed seller said price, drove car home to TN and registered/paid taxes.

Are you buying from a dealer or private party?

Here in CA you pay the local sales tax. Alot of people go up to Oregon (where there is no sales tax) to get around paying. But as soon as you go to register it here, the DMV hits you with the sales tax. I'd check with your local DMV.

The CA state board of equalization is now going after people who bought mobile homes or modular homes in Oregon (again no sales tax) and brought them into the state. Recently, a person from the state went through all of Shasta County's building permits going back to 2005. Any permits that were issued for homes that were bought out of state and did not pay the CA sales tax, the homeowners are going to be getting a tax bill in the mail.

Buying a vehicle out of state.

It's based on where you are registering the car.

I have bought cars in Oregon and California and had to pay Washington state sales tax where I reside.

When I first moved to Washington I bought a new car in Oregon before I changed my license, registered it at my parents house and avoided sales tax.

About a couple months later I got pulled over by an officer in Washington and informed me that he had records of me making utility payments in Washington State thus establishing residency. He wrote me a ticket and told me that I had 7 days to pay the sales tax on the car or they would issue a warrant.

That was the only thing that he pulled me over for.

Re: Buying a vehicle out of state.

Thanks guys. That's what I have always thought. We have purchased vehicles from different counties before and always paid our county sales tax which is lower. I saw a lot people online saying it was where you bought it. I didn't think that was correct.

Not sure yet. Going to look at several infiniti g35s.

Always liked the g35, especially the coupes. Only thing I didn't like about them was the instrument lighting. I can't stand that orange they used.

Re: Buying a vehicle out of state.

They have been on my list for awhile. I should have just bought one instead of the JAG, but there are very few if any in my area. Up until a few months ago the closest infiniti dealer was 2 hours south of me. So not too many made it up here.

Re: Buying a vehicle out of state.

A while back, I found one exactly like I wanted. Dark metallic gray, charcoal interior(not leather), and a 6 speed. I mentioned it to the wife, and I got the cold day in Hell look. I guess she remembered my 97 240sx I had when we were dating....and how much she hated it. Guess I'm stuck with the heavy Chevy for a bit longer.

Re: Buying a vehicle out of state.

About a month ago I found an almost perfect one right next to where I work. I told the wife I wanted it and she said sell the JAG first. The g35 sold within a week. The JAG sold the next week. Timing.

Re: Buying a vehicle out of state.

The Carmax here has an 06 coupe, metallic gray, six speed, with only 54k miles. $21k....
Only if I could.

Re: Buying a vehicle out of state.

The new convertible g35 is pretty sweet. But I can't do a convertible for a few years now. I might be crazy, but I like the 03-06 coupes better than the new ones.

Same here. I like the g35, except the lighting, but like the g37 front end and interior more. I'd still drive either one.

Here in the Golden State, if you are a California resident and buy a car out of state, California charges Use Tax (Same rate as Sales Tax) for the county of your residence. You are credited for any out of state sales tax you paid when you bought the car and can prove. If you buy a car from a dealer in California and take delivery in California, the dealer is required to collect sales tax from you. If the car is delivered either by common carrier or driven on dealer plates to some location out of California, then the California Sales tax is not collected. At one time, if you were a California resident and bought a car out of state and used it out of state for a minimum of 90 days (i.e. such as European Delivery of a new car actually driven for 90+ days and not including shipping time from Europe back to the US) then it was not subject to Use Tax when it was brought back. Not sure if that exemption still exists. YMMV

That's some "Big Brother" stuff.

Sales taxes are always calculated for the state/city/locale in which you have a residence. Use taxes may be a different story.

I want to move back to Oregon...
