C4 Downshift cable problem!!

I finally jacked my stang to finish some unfinished business;

The kickdown cable that was on my c4 is shown below. The distance between the kickdown lever on the trans to the leverarm coming off of the throttle linkage is 4.5" and with the pedal to the floor is about 6". The cable won't adjust that short. Are the various length cables? The linkage is solid non adjustable piece. Advice please :shy.

There is only one that I know of. The cable should not be tight when in the rested position as it activates the kick down lever only at a certain position as the pedal is depressed. If it is to tight, it will activate it to soon. Or this is my thoughts on it anyway....

Thank you Pete! I just got off the phone with the man who overhauled it. It's been almost 2 years since he did it so he didn't remember me very well~ hmp! He said it's not madatory to have the kickdown and can be done manually until I can get over to him to let him see it. I just thought it might hurt the trans not to have that hooked up~ so I'm a little relieved. now I have my little tach in place to see about this not going into 3rd gear or not. Back to the garage!

I'm not running the kickdown on my c4. The kick down rod is in my box of extra parts.

I just manually downshift it. Which is more fun anyway.

I guess that's what I'm gonna do~manualy shift~ that's ok! oh, I got my stang to shift into 3rd gear finally! Just had to get the rpm's up a bit(while watching on my new little tach!), just seemed like it took it a while to get it to shift. the real test will be on the road, so no worries right now! Boy, the motor really gets wound up on a 3 speed at 60-70mph!
thanks ya'll!

That's one of the reasons that I decided to go with a TKO tranny. I used to have both a C4 and a toploader in the fastback, and with 4:11's it really screamed out on the freeway even with the 275/60 tires.

No wonder motors were only good for 100k miles, if they made it that far! My stang won't be my primary source of transporation, so I can live with a c4 for a while, besides it's not even on the street yet!! lol If I should choose the route of upgrading to a TKO or AOD, I will buy another mustang already equipped with it.

Unless you're going to do a LOT of highway driving, I'd consider "living with it" for as long as possible. Keep in mind that your typical V8 engine's power curve starts to bring in HP/TQ at ~3000RPM.

The standard 289 4V's sweet spot begins around 1800 rpm up to 4200 or so for torque. Passing a car from 60 mph (2000 rpm) is as easy as pie with a 3.00:1 rear end.
