Before you ask...no I don not have pics....yeah I know it didn't happen. And considering the Twilight Zone I'm experiencing maybe it didn't.

Driving on 101 yesterday I spot CA Black Plates...on a Toyota MR2, late 80s model. :eek:mg Looking at the letters/numbers it looks like they took CA Blue plates and painted them black and yellow. Not that I haven't seen that done before. :vic :beat

So will this now be on E-bay as a Balck plate car? :rp :lol :lol :lol

Technically, no, it is not legal, it is considered defacing the plate. Depending on who you talk to, it may not be legal to refurbish any weathered plate. On the other hand, unless you are doing something really stupid or are being as a$$hole, most cops around here will look the other way for something like that. In the time I have been running black/yellow personalized plates, I have only been questioned by a cop once at a coffee shop and he was ok with it!

I didn't mention names Jeff :vic.....

But black plates on a 80s Toyota????? :lol :lol :lol This guy is asking to be pulled over.

It is called "Misuse of registration/license plates" and it is a misdemeanor. You must go before the Judge and there is no such thing as a fix it ticket on this.

Also carries a large fine. I can not remember how much though. It goes for the little sticker too.

Plate alteration (changing blue plates to black) is definitely illegal. Plate restoration (repainting black plates in the same original color) should not be considered an alteration and I believe is generally seen as acceptable. That's not to say some DMV staff won't share that opinion.

Can you even purchase the correct paint to refurbish plates?

The California black plates did not have reflective paint, so in theory you could find some black paint that would match the original plates.

I hear the problem is finding the correct shade of yellow. I'm not sure where I heard this (maybe even here) is that school bus yellow is pretty close.

Shouldn't a good paint supply be able to match the color?????

Don't CA Black plates go as ABC123 and CA Blue plates go as 123ABC? Simply changing blue to black is dumb!

Randy:

By the early 1980's the blue/yellow plates carried the seven character configuration starting with 1AAA000 with the "0's" being zeros. At about the same time the reflectorized plates were made available as an option and they started with 2AAA000. Sometime near the end of 1986 the blue/yellow plates were discontinued and the reflectorized plates became the standard.

Why are you guys wasting my time having to read a post about something that never happened? Are we that bored and lonely?

I am :vic

The YOM Program is run by idiots!!!!! Took them over four months to tell me the paperwork is lost so reapply and get your plates re-validated!1!!

Ouch! I'm sorry for your difficulties. When you go back, make sure they charge you the full $45 or Sacramento will kick the app. back to you for the difference. Also make sure the DMV clerk copies your plate and fills out the bottom of the form and signs it. These are all things I've heard of that delayed an application. :rp

They did all those things and still have my money. They couldn't tell me what was missing.
