Car question though not Ford

guruatbol

Always on vacation!
Sorry, not sure where else to ask and many of us are multiple brand owners....So....My Daughter who is completely car stupid has a 98 Durrango and lives in North Dakota. She says all four windows will not roll up or down from any of the switches on her arm rests. Oh, they are power. She further goes on and says the electric locks will not work from the switch either.

Is there a module that regulates these things on the Dodges? She says she replaced the fuse and nothing. Could there be a secondary fuse somewhere or a fusable link bad? How do we find it?

I would think it is not a simple bad switch because it is nonworking on all the switches.

Is there any Stangfixers near Grand Forks, ND that wouldn't mind helping her? She might make her famous homemade from scratch real live mac and cheese. She is a starving college student.

I don't know for sure on a Dodge but some cars have a relay fuse in a panel of relays under the hood. You might check there...

Couple of ideas.

Check the window lock-out switch on the drivers side. All window power will route through it, I believe. There will also be relays involved in the window circuit(s) most likely under hood.

As the power locks do not work either, I would lean toward a problem in the wiring in the drivers door harness causing a short.

I found a Dodge forum and they just responded back. It may be the switch assembly on the driver's door. They get wet and short out. Also the plug likes to work loose. when my daughter gets back to me I will have her check into it. A new switch at Napa is between $93 and $125. So if she can or has a friend who can remove the battery cables and then remove this switch and replace it, I think it is a good place to start. Maybe I can get lucky and the connector is loose, but she lives in the frozen North and some moisture probably got in there and fried the switch.

Anyone close to there wanna look at it?

Thanks for the thought, Sluggo!

She is going to ask the guys who are doing some work on it tomorrow in the way of new belt and fixing the AC to R&R the switch. She is going to ask them if they can get the part through their parts guys or if she needs to get it. I found one at two different parts houses.

mel,

just to verify, the power to all the switches runs thru the main drivers door switch cluster. can't remember on the dodges, but many of the newer vehicles have a control module behind the door panel (looks like a black plastic box with a long, flat wire connector similar to the old voltage regulators) that controls everything in the door. if it gets unplugged or goes bad, everything quits.

I found a pdf shop manual for the 98 durrango. I also got onto dodgeforum.com. Between them there is no little regulator type thing in the door, it is built into the switch on the driver's door.

Dodges are designed by idiots!

Anyway, $100 part and 10 minutes of work ought to fix it. Now to find the part and the person to do the work. My daughter is mechanically impaired! She can't even drive a nail with a hammer.

Thanks guys,

Mel
