Car wants to start itself

Hey all,so heres the problem.I run the car for a while ,drive it around, stop and park it ,shut her off and then it sounds almost like its turning and about to start again but with more a "whoosh" sound, like an old person thats exasperated after getting out a chair(my old man makes that sound). If i park it and just let it idle a tad then shut it off it probly wont do it.Its worrying me alot because i almost beleive there could be hot spots forming in one of the cylinder which im sure would be pretty bad. Also this started happening after my friend screwed with my carb settings.Ive trolled the net looking for carb setting instruction(even checked holley) but none are very clear or very good and i dont yet have a good feel of whats "right" for the car. Thanks for any help.
Heres the run down on my car:

69 coupe
302w 2v
holley 650 double pumper
edelbrock performer rpm intake manifold
bored .030 over
4spd top loader
MSD ignition

Sounds like it's dieseling (running backwards w/o fuel). Most often, it's because the idle is too high, but it can also do it if the timing is off.

Not too sure what "dieseling" is.Guess its running backwards? How is that possible?Ok so lets say that the problem, what are the fixes besides the idle, which is the first thing ill play with ,anything else? How can it start itself up after the ignition is turned off?

Check the timing on the engine. Once you have the timing set check your idle. It may need to be backed off a little and you may need to play with the a/f mixture on the carb. If it were me, being the carb unguru I am, I would set the a/f back to stock settings, crank car and check/adjust timing, then play with the idle. When adjusting your idle make sure to blip the throttle at the carb to ensure proper settling of the throttle lever. It sounds like your buddy just adjusted everything "up".

Idle settings too lean with throttles open too much will cause dieseling. Was common on '70s carb cars, so much so that they added anti-dieseling soleniods (completely closed the throttle plates when the car was turned off). Carbon buildup in the cylinder doesn't help the condition, '70s engines were also prone to carbon. :scar

Richen the mixture somewhat, and then reset the idle speed to the correct value.

How is that possible?

Your issue is likely fuel/timing related, but carbon deposits within the cylinder head combustion chamber get hot enough to act like a spark plug after the ignition is turned off. There is a way to remove these carbon deposits w/o removing the cylinder head.

With the engine running and the air cleaner removed, slowly pour water down the carb. I know this sounds crazy, but it'll work to remove the carbon deposits. The engine will want to stall.... maually give it more throttle and keep pouring the water. A quart should do it.

The water acts as an internal "bead blaster" during the combustion process.

Sure, but the water is free and works well to de-carbon cylinders. Does nothing for valve gunk IME, however.

Take that bad boy out in an empty parking lot and do some WFO burnouts and donuts. It'll get rid of some carbon.........and rubber!

I can remember waaaaay back when Dad would say "go burn the carbon off the pistons Son".

OK, maybe that's not what HE said, but that's what I heard :lol

IMHO Get some Chevron Techron in the next couple tanks of gas and it will clean bot the carbon and any gunk.

Shoveling water down my carb sure does sound odd so im gona try the sea foam first then water if it still feels off.I think the problem is air/fuel and ive just about scoured the net for some easy to understand/implement guidelines to tuning my double pumper but there arent any.Can anyone either tell me in baby steps how to do this or give me a link to a decent web page?I know my way around a car but not to the extent that alot of people on this board do.Thanks for all the info.

Forget all that other stuff until you get your carb set back to where it was running fine. It's time to get a book and learn or pay someone else to make the adjustments.
