Carb guys chime in

Took carb off and am taking apart. Didn't feel like draining anti-freeze if you've seen my other post. Edelbrock 1406 and the first thing I notice is the floats sitting "down" with a 1 3/8" gap verses the recommended 1" gap. Second thing I notice is the float needle (drivers side) is wanting to "hang" ever so slightly. It doesn't drop down with the float. So far I've just separated the carb "halves". Haven't taken lower half bowl venturi thingys apart yet. What's my next step besides adjusting the floats?

I have a 1407 on mine. I rebuilt it and set the float level to recommended height and still have problems. Mine floods and wants to die cornering and stopping. Definitely float issue.

Here's my fix. Next upgrade on my list.

Your fix for improperly set floats is a new carb? Wish I had that kind of money...

I set the floats in my 600 higher than recommended. The factory spec is designed for normal driving. Any kind of performance driving is going to want a little higher float level. You could also need to tweak the mix a bit richer. The flooding issue is definitely a problem, though. When does it flood?

I still have slight issues with the car wanting to sputter and die if I corner or stop very hard in neutral, but apparently that's a problem with the bowl design. I have no problem during normal or moderate driving, or if I simply keep the car in gear while driving hard.

I wish I had that kind of money too. I'm not willing to put any more work into a sh!t carb. The car sat on blocks for 7 years with gas in it. It needs replacing anyway. I spent 40 dollars on it trying to make it functional until I could get a new carb. I would have never chosen it to begin with.

If you read the post I made I stated that I have the same problem you do....stopping and cornering. If I lower the float level any more, it will run out of fuel.

The summit carb is a 4100 knock off. It has gotten fairly good reviews and is cheap.

Why would you lower the float level? If it wants to die in corners, raise the float level. You might also use a softer stepup spring to help keep it out of power mode when it does sputter like that.

It's not a shit carb, but it's not designed for road racing. When I say stopping and cornering hard, I mean the edge of the (admittedly crappy) tire limits. I'll be switching to a Demon or QuickFuel at some point in the future, but I don't have any real problem with my Edelbrock right now.

That said, the Summit carb is definitely interesting. If you do get it, make sure you post to let us know how it works.

Why would you raise the float level ie, put more fuel in the bowls, when it's already to high?
It is a shit carb in the fact that it sat like it did. I went through it forward and backward trying to save it. It also had a nice amateur install with haphazard cabling and kickdown connections.

Sometimes it's more cost effective to start over.

Down Sluggo's road.......I had a new 600 DP on the car when I finished the resto and had nothing but problems with it. Worked on that thing every which way to fix it and never did. It would load up under heavy braking and sputter through the apexes. It would als die during panic type stops. I tried all kinds of fixes for naught. I even had a carb guy look it over and the suggestions he made were useless too.
Finally bought a blueprinted 650DP, set up specifically for my engine and road course stuff, it's been perfect ever since.

Sometimes you just have to cry Uncle :expl

Hey Sluggo... I got 2 of the original holley 4100 (2 different series though). They are both 750cmf if memory serves me correct. Both need rebuild. You welcome to one if you want to rebuild it.
