Carb makes pop noise

If Gert sits for a while and hasn't been started, when I try to start her, it takes a bit to get her warmed up and stay running (not unusual) but every now and then there is a loud pop noise coming from the carb and what appears to be a poof/release of pressure of something coming from it through the air filter. Is it from too much or too little gas in the carb? Or is there some other reason for this I should be concerned about?

Are you describing a back-fire through the carb you experience when cranking the engine?

Kat,

If it is the timing that is off a bit causing the back-fire, it is not off by much. I don't know if you have a decent timing light or not but you should at least mark the distributor position prior to making any adjustment. That way you can always know where to adjust it back if necessary.

I have no idea at all how to adjust timing. This is one of those little things when I call in car club timing guru's who know all that stuff. lol

Sorry Kat. They will turn the distributor clockwise to advance the timing and they won't move it much. One bolt holds it in place. Loosen the bolt, turn the distributor, tighten the bolt.

It's pretty easy and should be checked once-a-year or so, or when you change plugs is a good reminder too. An "ok" timing light costs only $25 or so, IIRC.

Ok I called up some friends and had them take a look. Turns out they said they can't adjust the timing. I have no timing tab?

Also it was pointed out that the choke was open all the time, doesn't open & close and that could be another reason maybe for the backfire?

:shrug

Do you have timing marks on the Dampner? If so, pull the VC off the pass side, find TDC on # 1 and line up a pointer of some sort to 0 degrees.

You could also advance the timing a minute amount at a time. Advance, tighten, go for a quick drive, at a low speed put it in top gear and mash the go pedal. If it knocks a lot, you went too far. If it just barely makes a slight knocking (pinging) sound, you're real close.

I don't have a choke on my carb and it never backfires. It blows up, but no blowback!

Uh, nope...

Sounds complicated. lol I can't hear anything over the exhaust anyway.

Well, the no choke set-up can answer some of your cold start issues.

You need to learn to set your own timing. It's kind of car mechanic 101. Finding TDC is about as easy as it gets. You don't need to pull a VC either. Pull the number 1 plug to find it. Lots of ways to do it. Shine a light in the hole and watch for the top of the piston to peak it's travel. Plug the hole with your finger or thumb and feel the pressure as you turn the engine. Just get yourself a long enough breaker bar that you can easily turn the engine slowly by hand and your good to go.
If you want to be more accurate, do as Mark suggests and watch the valve train action.

Really, you can get damn close by ear and seat of the pants.

what about setting it with a vacuum guage? had a racing buddy years ago that dialed his in with a guage.

You should have timing marks on the harmonic balancer, but might have to look closely to find them. Once you've located them and have an idea of where you want the timing to be (for example 10 degrees BTDC), then you can mark it.

As for the timing marker tab, maybe it was removed. Can you take a photo of the front of the motor, looking down at the harmonic balancer, on the driver's side? You should see something like this...
