Carb question

In my 66 I've got a stock 302 auto out of a 75 mercury. It's got a 2 barrel on now but looking to get a little more out of the motor. My dad suggest a new intake with a four barrel and headers.

At a dead stop if I floor it now it might spin a tire but don't have the get up and go I want. Should this give the giddy up I want or do I need to go deeper in the engine?
If so any thoughts on which carb and intake?

I would run a 600 cfm carb....I prefer Holley but Edlebrock is good to. They both make good mid level intakes too. Go electric choke.

It will give you a bit more get up and go but a mild cam would be a nice addition since you are doing an intake too.

Electronic ignition is also a nice touch for ease of maintenance.

On both cars I woke them up by using a Performer and edlebrock carb. I put Tri-Y headers on them and they both have given huge improvement in the seat of the pants. Also don't forget ignition! I have a nice Accel old school dizzy in the 67 and a Mallory dual point on the 65.

Soon they will have electronic ignitions.

You will be amazed how much you get out of the simple bolt ons.

A cam is an awesome addition too! It will wake things up by allowing the new carb and intake/exhaust to breath correctly, but start with the easy stuff and go from there!

You'll see a little improvement with a 4V carb on a 2V engine. Plan on headers and exhaust if you go that route.

But the better bang for the buck would be to get lower gears for the rear. A 2V engine with 3.55 gears means a lot of low end torque. . .

Gears are in the long term plan. Carb , headers, exhaust then prolly 3.73 gears and a 4 speed trans. Some where in there new paint to fix a few bubbles, runs and maybe rust bubbles.
I need to buy some lottery tickets.

If a new cam is not in the cards right now, advancing your current cam with an adjustable timing chain and gears will help free up some horses.
