Carb Spacer or not

I want to know what you guy think about carb spacers.

A 1" spacer came with my motor and the studs on my intake are longer to accommodate a carb spacer but after some web research there seems to be mixed opinions on them.

As long as I have the clearance should I run with it?

Carb spacers are almost always a win in terms of power improvement. The biggest gain comes from getting the carb up and isolated from the heat of the manifold.

You don't have to run a full 1" spacer if clearance is an issue. The most important thing is that the spacer is phenolic.

If it didn't cost an arm and leg, I'd send you the 1/2" phenolic spacer hanging on my garage wall.

There are lots of advantages to using a spacer. A phenolic spacer helps with heat transfer from the intake to the carb. A spacer helps increase plenum volume and helps fine tune a combination. The best spacers that I have seen are 4-hole tappered spacers like the Wilson spacers and Super Sucker spacers. It is no joke that you can pick up 10+ hp with them and sometimes much more. They arent cheap though at $100+.

I had a problem with hesitation when starting from a stop light, a normal start, with a Holley 570 avenger on my 302/5sp. I got stuck in traffic and the temp jumped up to 195+ and the hesitation seemed to go away. I took out the 1/2 inch phenolic spacer and the problem is gone. Of course I could have some other problem being masked like I really need a bigger squirter.

The first problem I'd address is the improper thermostat. If you're 'jumping' to 195F, the engine is running too cold. Ideal operating temp for a sbf is 195-210F. There's a reason the factory put 192/195 thermostats in them.

Hi, I'm using a 1" phenolic spacer with a 600 edelbrock carb on a weiand intake atop a '90 5.0 HO with the AOD tranny and I never have a problem with "Hot" start that some seems to have with carbs.
