Catalytic converter replacement

Took our 1988 Alfa Romeo Graduate in to get it's biannual smog check. It failed at highNOx at 25 mph. Technician suspects wore out CAT. Anyone had experience on worn out CATs? I bought a replacement unit n will install hoping that's the fix.

Make sure the replacement is approved by the state of CA for use here.

The last one I dealt with now has nothing inside it.

We don't have smog inspections.

swapped the cat out. What a pain. Car seems to drive better with a little more acceleration. I am getting too old for this stuff.
