CCNA certification

I know there are some IT guys here. I'm just looking to advice my knowledge and skillset for future advancement. Anybody know anything about this? Does Cisco offer these classes for free at the Cisco Learning Network. I'm actually pretty versed in alot of this stuff, just from work experience. It would be nice to add the certification under my belt.

I'm currently working on mine. CBT Nuggets has a good set of videos out that I've been using. Breaks it down into almost English. I also picked up a 1721 router and 2950 switch off of eBay for $60.

So, you basically find a way to study for it, then take the practice exam, then go to a proctored exam?

Well, that's what I'm doing. You can get the CCENT then go for the CCNA, since there's two tests for the CCNA certification. CCENT is basically networking 101 with some router/switch commands thrown in. I prefer to have the actual IOS to play with vs a simulator.

Will you guys speak English? I have no idea what you're talking about... :soapboxrant

Yes....I had to take a second look..... My wife was a CNA....as in nursing....I was trying to figure out the first C....then I decided to read on thru the posts and figured it was nothing to do with a medical field.

Always good to get the paper when you already know the job.

I'm a telephone man. I specialize in business data networks as all the other guys are scared to touch them. I've gathered lots of information on different networks over the years, and would like to quit bsing my way through them and be a bit more technical.

After all, the telephony field is changing and it would be nice to have a leg up in the future as I still have 30+ years to go :nut

A Ccna then ccnp voice would do well.
I haven't quite decided if I want to dive into the networking side of things, or go another route like VMWare server visualization. Even then, I would need VMWare certs, as well as a microsoft server cert.

I checked a site out that gave a practice exam. Got 11 out of 20 lol. Some of that crap is over my head and something I've never encountered.

I took the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Administrator) class about 10 years ago but never went for my certification. My company covered the expense so it wasn't a huge concern, but it wasn't cheap for the instructor led classes / labs. If I remember right, there were some lab exercises that the simulator wasn't well suited for. I don't recall details, but definitely remember deferring some exercises until I got in the lab. I'm pretty sure we used the 2950 routers as well.

It looks like there are self study options as well these days. If you are already exposed to some of this stuff, self study should probably be fine. I took it at a time where I had little to no network experience and no practical use for the knowledge. I took it moreso to broaden my understanding of networks.

Here's a link that might help get you started...
http://www.cisco.com/web/learning/le3/le2/le0/le9/learning_certification_type_home.html

I've got some circa 2001 Routing and Switching review cassette tapes (4 hrs) if either of you are interested, you can have them.

That's my biggest concern with fooling with it. I don't use it often, and not sure what some of the understanding will ever achieve me. I think I need to call HR and see if they will work with me to get this.

And playing around the internet looking at different sites, it looks like alot of this stuff I know in practice and application. I have done alot of it, but bsed my way through it. I had no idea what the actual terms were lol.

Man, if you only knew the changes I have witness in the last 6 years. I work in landline and dsl services. I know nothing of the cellular side of it.

You could probably pass the ccent right now, then mess the the ccna. Find any practice tests? If not, I might have some on those training cds.

I doubt it. I don't know alot of the lingo. I've always pulled a GW Bush move and just cowboyed through it. Trial and error brother.

Found that site, that's pretty steep. What route are you going? Streaming?

Just ccna for now. I've been a remote helpdesk/field tech for way too long and want to branch out into something else. I pretty much work from home, call people, remote into their machine, and install software or troubleshoot problems.

As for the server in the pic. I just used that to train up on HP servers and server 2008.

Wait till you upgrade to fiberoptics(Nylon Clothesline) like I did. Those tin cans sound like the people are standing next to you and your interwebs speed will go through the roof.
