Changing Oil

OK...my extended warranty is up, and it's time to change the oil. Put the 06 up on the lift after loosening up the lug nuts for tire rotation. Put a socket and wrench on the oil pan plug and nothing happens! Well, it did slip off prying with a good deal of force. WTF?

Find a 6 point 5/8" socket and a breaker bar, and it felt like about 80-100 ft-pounds to break the nut loose. Huh? Last oil change was done at a Stealership. Shop Manual says 19 ft-lbs, and after removing the oil, I tighten up the nut. Put in oil, and not a drop leaks out. I don't understand why anyone would gorilla an oil pan plug.

Surprisingly, I did not find a metal or plastic washer under the plug; maybe the new designed plug doesn't need one.

If you really check out the shop procedures, you will find that a lot of bolts are not torqued but drive train and suspension items. Good employees (the few) use the torque wrench all the time......but shops cannot watch their every move so some cheat. Then, I could go into improper torque procedures.....once it clicks...stop....do not go for one more click.

Not sure about the washer......hmmmmm

Unfortunately, with most shops, it's all about time/speed, I wouldn't be surprised if they used an air tool on that bolt. You know what they say torq it till it snaps, then back off 1/4 turn. If a little is good, a lot is better and too much is just right!
