Chevy help./.update 1

1966 Impala Vert. Engine turned over once, and now will not turn over with key. No headlights work at all. Power top and power windows work. Battery good, cables removed and cleaned.

Not much info but will be attacking the problem in the am. Cannot locate any schematics on line.

Plan on using a remote starter switch on the starter to see if engine turns. Jump power to coil and see if it starts. Check connections and fuses. Check power at normal places.

Car was driven today, parked most of the day, and this happened when they were ready to go home.

Any ideas?

Re: Chevy help.....

did you try to jump the car? the battery can have enough power to work the little stuff and not turn the engine. Or the starter could be dead. You'll know with your planned diagnosis.

Re: Chevy help.....

I was not at the car yet so I am just guessing from talking with the owner.

Re: Chevy help.....

Weird, top and windows work, but no headlights. First thiught was starter cable, but the no headlights throws a money wrench in the plan.

Got to the car....a nice Impala SS 396/auto Vert, 63,000 miles, fresh paint, interior, and top. While waiting for the owner, I checked all the normal stuff. Battery in top shape, (red top), wiring looks good. Odd that the top and windows work without the key.....but normal for this particular car. No power at all to the key. Start checking fuseable links and other fuses in the system while tracing the main feed. I had just arrived at the fuse box when the owner showed. After consulting with him I find out a local shop "fixed" a plug near the fuse box.

There are two main plugs that go inside at the fuse box. I pulled the outer one and found the main power wire pin to be pushed out and not making contact. That pin had been making poor contact for some time and has melted the area around the pin on both side of the plug. I checked all the rest of that wire and it shows no sign of overload so I feel the bad pin connection was the problem. Did a temporary fix and the car starts and runs great now.

Now, I need to locate the plug on the ehgine side of the harness plus the double plug box like affair that mounts under the fuse box. With this, I will be able to fix the problem for good. As it is, I am not sure the pins will stay in place for an extended time frame.

Off to Chevy land to see what I can find on line.

WTG Pete. Now Mid will have to make you a partner in checking his shorts. Oh I mean checking for shorts. :3sum

Nice Job Pete. I hope the dude got you some wattles.... You should probably give mid a few bottles for all of his teachings. Good job!

At this point, I just tell them to catch up to me later with whatever they think the job is worth. The owner wants me to do some other wiring work on the car so I will see him again.

Share Wattles.........how dare you. lol Besides, I don't think Mid was around my area back in '71 when the USAF put me thru an elec. wiring school.....just not a fun thing for me to crawl under a dash...

But, I do share my Wattles with him when I see him.........

Hell, I'd just replace all of that crappy wiring with Ford stuff!

I was actually thinking about that. I have found nothing in replacement plugs for this application.

Anyone have a salvage yard close that has '66 Impala parts?
