Classic insurance concerns...

Looking at both Grundy and Haggerty for insurance on our 2000 Lightning. They tell me the coverages are the same and I am using the same declare value so I would expect the rates to be close but Grundy is $192/year, Haggerty is $500/year. I think they both are about equal on how they treat the customer so am I over thinking this and old age is catching up or what? USAA who I am with now on just a regular policy is $900/year for a blue book value on the truck. All these are considering I have two other vehicles insured on other policies. I also realize the restricted driving of the classic ins and have no issues with that.

Grundys rate sure looks good....

I was with Haggerty for a long time until their rates went through the roof several years ago. I switched to Grundy after comparing rates and coverage and have been happy.

Since Pete seems to have had his question answered, can i hijack the thread and pose another or two?

Who has had to make a claim with any of these "classic" insurance companies and how has it gone? Seems to me to be the most pertinent need to know bit of information. If one could save a few hundred bucks but be in a huge drawn out fight in the event the coverage was ever needed would seem to make the savings insignificant. Just looking to see if anyone has any real anecdotal stuff they car to share.

At the same time a bit of a primer on such coverage would be helpful too. My car will finally roll out of the garage soon and will need coverage. If it is only a fair weather car mileage totals will never be an issue but what about use during the four months or so it will be driven. How lenient are they on such? If not in route to a car show or such and involved in an accident am I risking non-coverage? What kind of policies does everyone carry?

Call Grundy and talk to them about the insurance because they will cover it before the car is complete.

Don't bust a stitch.

I actually had a minor claim with Hagerty in 2004. Rock from a truck took out the windshield in my 65 just outside Paducah KY. ONE phone call, no forms, easy peasy. They told me to take it wherever I wished and send them the bill. That even gave a list of recommended shops in my area. Easiest claim ever.

I have my Mustang and our 1988 Alfa Romeo Graduate both insured witih the rest of our fleet, house and an umbrella policy with State Farm. I pay about 5000 per month for all 5 cars, house and umbrella. In a year or two, the rate should drop but the older cars are not driving the price. The F250 that SWMBO drives is the pile driver.

Well, I bumped the value some with Grundy and landed at $230 per year for the Lightning based on input from several others. The use of the truck has been the same for two years so we won't have issues with that. So, the Lightning goes from $900 per year to $230 per year with equal or better coverage, no hassle claims, no deductable and no changes in our usage.

Thanks for all the input.

Do you have to park it in a locked garage? Any restrictions on use? Will they cover the replacement of tires at every stoplight?

Lol.....yep, locked garage, restrictions actually fit the way I drive it, replacement tires are my dime, unfortunatly....kind of like the replacement adult beverages.... I keep looking for sponsors for both.

I have Grundy for about 8 years or so now. They did agreed value with no appraisal. They did send out a guy to photo the car. I went with them because there were no mileage restrictions like some had. They don't cover racing or my teenage sons driving it and it needs to be in the garage when at home. They had no issues with me driving it to shows and leaving it at a hotel overnight though.
Anyway, I have had two claims. One was my windshield got broke when we drove out to the Myrtle Beach bash a few years ago. They covered with no questions asked and let me have the shop that painted the car install it.
The second claim was more serious. I went to Beach Bend for a car show and they parked us in the grass. My car sits pretty low and when the right front tire dropped into a soft spot or rut, the lower nose caught the ground. That broke the fiberglass and pulled the fender in as well as messed up some paint. Again, they covered it no questions, let me pick the shop. No second quote needed and my rates never changed.
On top of all that, they automatically raise the insured value each year.
