Computer got a virus, how do I get rid of it?

Just like the subject says, I got up this morning and my laptop is infected with some sort of virus. My virus program (OneCare) expired a while back and needed updating. I tried downloading some software from Microsoft but it won't work because the OneCare is on the computer. How can I get rid of the thing? The Geek Squad at Best Buy wants $200 to disinfect it. They told me once a virus is there, the software you can buy doesn't do any good. Is this correct? If not, what should I buy to fix this?

Thanks,
Doug

Do you have access to another pc? If you do, download Malwarebytes onto a flash drive. Boot your pc into Safe Mode, F8 before you get the windows splash screen. Once in, install it. It should have the latest updates already. Let that run in safe mode. See if you can clean it. You might want to also try AVG antivirus. Both these programs are free and I've been using them for a while now.

You can try this on the infected pc, but not sure if the infection will let you install anything.

I had one attached to an email a while back that lauched itself with the email in preview and not actually opened. It sailed right past Norton. I got rid of Norton and had to try the free version of Macifee and that didnt kill it either. Finally downloaded the free version of avg and that killed it. As mentioned above malwarebytes is a great program that is free also

Thank you all very much. I'm running Malwarebytes right now. I'll let you know how it goes. I downloaded AVG also so I'll run it too.

Thank you Gigantopithecus and everyone else. The malwarebytes worked. I'm running it on my other computer now which has been slow for some time now. The Geek Squad wanted $200 to do what this just did. I guess I'll put some kind of virus protection software on now so this doesn't happen again.

No problem. Another program to get is ccleaner. It removes junk files, bad registry entries and such. I run all 3 of these and it keeps the pc pretty darn squeaky clean and runnning right.
