first off, i'm a dummy when it comes to working on these things...

i've got a "exe" file thats running my cpu at around 90-97% all the time & i suspect that its causing all sorts of other problems i'm having. it seems to be related to "system 32" whatever that is. heres a pic of the file on the processes tab. any ideas on what it is or how to fix (in plain english)??

You can go down the list one at a time and put what it is in Google search bar and it will pop up with exactly what it is and a suggestion if it is something that you can disable or not, and if it is harmful.

It's been a while since I did this myself. I was surprised how many things that were running in the background that when I did a search could be disabled.

everything is automatically updated, so shouldn't have any issues there. whatever that is, it is either caused by or has affected my norton antivirus. i cant even pull it up now. i was able to do a system restore to an earlier date & get on here. ran my spybot program & nothing came up. may try doing an uninstall/reinstall on the norton & see if it will work (it was working until last night so hasn't been down long).

oh, that file isn't currently running but the memory usage has jumped from 280,000 to 1.3 million K??

did that & it didn't give much info

I do not have any virus protection on my personal computers.

I just back up everything that I would miss if I lost it so, whenever one of my computers start running crappy like they are loaded down, I just reformat them.

stop the services "automatic update" or " windows update"
delete the contens of..
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\EventCache
and start the services

restart the pc

Well, whatever it is, it has norton messed up. Cant open it or uninstall it. I ran a couple other scans & they show no issues. They did somehow get that file to stop running & the memory usage is back to normal.

Any ideas on how to backdoor the norton? Tried uninstalling directly & by using the uninstall tab in the control panel.

Might have to do a manual uninstall. Symantec's site should have a walkthrough.

Just heard from a friend who is lead computer tech here in nash for the govt.

That's what we call the "blue screen of death". Typically when you start seeing that you've got serious issues. How did the restore go?
If you are certain about the cvshost.exe file, that is a virus. It is the Gaobot.ao Worm.

Took the tower in to get it looked at & it wasnt "sick", the hard drive was going out. Picked up a new tower & the files are being transferred now. May have it up & running again tonight.

Get rid of Norton anyway. It doesn't like a lot of programs. Download AVG for free.

This. Or windows security essentials. I've got that on my laptop, and it stopped a threat from my work network....which happened to be running Symantec.

well, back up & running with the basics. gonna take a while for me to figure out this windows 7 & where everything is at....

will do on the anti virus stuff. this new tower came loaded with norton, so will leave it for now until i get everything else loaded up.
