Considering a Ford Transit Connect for Wifey

SWMBO would like to replace the 1993 Ford Explorer, and she hauls around her zoo (2 65+ lb dogs and 4 cats), grocery shopping (mostly dog food and cat litter), and would use the vehicle to run away from a hurricane (of course carrying the zoo but not me...). Typically, she drives about 800 miles per year, almost entirely in and around town. I use the vehicle once or twice a year to Pensacola for my Harness business at the MCA Show or to haul the utility trailer to pick up a load of mulch for the garden. I saw a Ford Transit Connect at the local Ford dealer, and did some Internet investigation. While it is not designed for twisties, nor has a whole lot of power, I think it is worth considering as a local transportation vehicle.

It can haul quite a bit inside, and the only thing we would be giving up (outside of creature comforts) would be the trailer hitch. The seats may not be the greatest, but I can easily go to a junk yard and find some good leather seats and install them, using the methods we all use in our Mustangs.

Does anyone here have any experience with these cars/trucks/utility vehicles? Wifey has also selected two different Mazda vehicles that may be worth looking at: the Tribute and the M6 (minivan), which may also serve her needs.

I'm a tech at a Ford dealer. Have yet to see one come in for any concerns. So far so good! Our parts dept. uses one as a parts truck, no issues with it either.

As long as you can live with a butt fugly vehicle, it looks like it would suit your needs. Keep in mind though, if any of us see you behind the wheel, you'll never hear the end of it!!

It may be butt ugly to some, but I sorta like it, since it is not jellybean shaped, and different.

Well, you have a point. At least it doesn't look like a PT :scar

Mid...you might want to check some Brit or European Ford club sites and ask about it there. Those little Ford trucks have been in use over there for years.

Ford Transits are very common over here, standard issue with gypos and builders. Generally they go forever and rarely give trouble...
