constant voltage unit?

Is it as simple as the name? Does it smooth the voltage or drop it? How do you test it to see it is is good? 12V in = 12V out?

OK, internet search reveals that it is pulsed 5V output. Anyone understand why it is pulsed? Does it need to be pulsed?

Just take the easy way out and replace it with this.

Using a bimetallic strip, it is the easiest (i.e. cheapest) way to regulate a higher voltage into a lower average voltage where the various systems involved (the gauges) are not quick to respond to variations in voltage. This design of CVR costs pennies, mostly for the housing.
