conversion harmonic balancer?

I keep having problems with the serpentine setup on my 1990 5.0 HO engine. It keeps sliding the serp belt over and splitting it. So I am going back to the v-belt setup. I have changed the waterpump/timing cover back to the 289 style standard rotation. I have the single groove wp pully and a 4 hole single groove crank pully. (the balancer is the 4 hole 50 oz for the '90 5.0) The problem is the wp pully sits in closer to the engine than the crank pully groove? They dont line up. I would need another groove on the balancer closer to the engine to match them up? Is the 50 0z balancer sticking out further than the old style 28 oz balancer? Why don't they line up? I am thinking that I need the 50 oz conversion balancer and then I could use the 3 hole 289 crank pully I have that has 3 grooves on it. That dang conversion balancer is about $180 from NPD. Is there anything different I could do? Thanks for any help/ideas...Gary

That was the same issue I found when I tried to convert the mid 80's 302 from serp. to v belt. I never did find a pulley before I sold the car. I also ran into pulley diameter problems as I searched for one. Is there a water pump with a longer shaft? I think I saw something once referring to that possibility but not sure of the rotation....

If the serp. is slipping, it is due to one pulley being out of alignment...a pain to figure out but possible.

Pete, I fooled with the serp. alignment until I was exhausted numerous times. Shimmed everything and thought I had it right until the last belt split. i have to have this car trustworthy to take my wife anywhere in it. :char

I understand where you are at....been there for sure.

I believe you are correct about the balancer design being placed more forward.

There were some crank pulleys from the early/mid 80's that were a combo, V belt and serp. that might have the spacing you need for the V belt. If memory is correct, the old Town Car 302's might have them.....and then again, my mind could be going...lol.

There are several like that on the market, Summit has them in the $60 ballpark. They have shims for pushing the pulley in or out, and both 3 or 4 bolt holes for the pulley depending on your setup.
