Converting 8mm to DVD

Anyone ever use any service to convert 8mm movies to DVD? My dad has tons of old reels that I know he would love to be able to watch again but I'm a little nervous about sending original movies out to some place that I do not know. I think this could be a cool Christmas gift for him, but I'd like to hear any feedback you guys might have. Anyone ever use these services? Thanks all.

I am in the same position...... Never found a place I felt comfortable with. Hoped for a local shop but no luck.

Our parents converted their 8mm to VHS approx 10 years ago and it worked out ok but they used a local, in-town source. The VHS added a generic instrumental soundtrack, which is better than nothing I suppose.

My mother had one reel done at a costco nearby, but they did a pretty terrible job. I'd like to avoid that here. I might just have to get brave and send a few out with my fingers crossed.
