Cool Old Movie

Here's what is believed to be the oldest 35 mm movie found to date. It was taken on a street car on Market Street in 1905 San Francisco. It's pretty interesting to watch.

I like the car that cuts so close in front of the street car near the end of the movie.

A few kids seemed to get a kick out of running in front of the cable car. Daredevils!

Very cool. Looks like about a 50-50 mix between horses and cars--rather more cars than I would have expected pre-Model T.

What I read about the movie is that a number of cars were brought in to make the traffic look busier.

Yep - San Fran Market Street.

I tried to correlate Google earth street view with any of the buildings in the old movie. The closest I could get was the power and gas building MAY be at about 1:45 in the You Tube video, right side of the screen. Or it may not. Hard to tell, but every thing else is gone - except for the clock tower at the waterfront. I guess we really are the first generation to be able to look at a video like that and know that none of those buildings, or those people, is around today.

Interesting that this one says the first film was made on April 14, 1906--4 days before the quake.

If I remember my San Francisco earthquake history correctly, Market St. is where they tried to use dynamite(!) to create a firebrake in an effort to stop the post-quake fire--unsucessfully as it worked out, and a good bit of the rest of the city burned.
