Custom Upper and lower control arms

janschutz

Corn Hauler
Looks like the passenger side ball joints on one of my 68s are toast. I always wanted to box in the Upper and lower control arms and put in screwed in ball joints. I have the old set of Upper and lower control arms. When do I get the other parts needed?

Talk to Sean at Street or Track, and/or John at OpenTracker. IIRC, one of them was working on a set with screw-in ball joints and had a thread going here.

it usually takes 1-3 days after you order it... :yah

seriously, there is a guy over on one of the other boards who is doing the screw in balljoints & i think he's actually making the arms from scratch too. you want me to dig up a link??

We have the DIY kits and I'll break up the kits and just sell the bracing if you like.

Re: Custom Upper and lower control arms + Questions

Now that I finished My need to fix projects, It time to start this upgrade. I got one on the LCAs stripped and sandblasted.

Do you need to cut the ball joint hole bigger so the screw in sleeve sill slide thru or just weld it to the bottom of the LCA? The weld the boxing piece to the bottom edge of the screw in sleeve.

I not sure how the back sleeve goes in. Do I need to drill out the current bushing sleeve?

Once you screw in the ball joint, are both these dust covers needed or just one of them?

And how does this boot stay on?

Lastly, I am going to powder coat the LCA, should I do this before the rear bearing go in?

Very good questions :confu I have the same parts, just haven't had time to get around to them yet.

First off, it looks like the LCA you have uses the larger 1 9/16" bushing that Ford put in some of the arms. Most of them are 1 7/16" , as are all of the aftermarket Moog arms. Our LCA bearing kit is designed to be used in the Ford arms with the 1 7/16" bushing and Moog lower arms. That outer bushing sleeve should slide out of the arm or you can cut a slit in it and fold it inward and it'll come out.

The red dust boot is a spare. The black rubber one will last a long time but the red poly will last longer. They both just slide over the tapered shaft and rest on the top of the screw in ball joint, they do not attache.

You should open up the hole for the weld in sleeve so the sleeve rest equally out of the top and the bottom of the arm.

DO NOT get that sleeve too hot when you weld it in place. It'll shrink and you won't be able to screw in the ball joint. I weld 1/4 way around one side, then let it cool before I do any more welding. Getting that sleeve to shrink can ruin your day.

You guys are welcome to give me a call anytime for tech support as well.

Thanks John,

These are Scott drake LCAs that I put on 8 years ago. I will measure the bushing tonight.
