Darn PITA Spring Compressor.

janschutz

Corn Hauler
This morning, I was removing the springs on my Dark blue coupe. After I compressed the spring and was removing them, the compressor let go and almost took my hands with it. Luckily I just lost some skin on the side of my right and and it hurts to type now.

Now I need to figure out how to get the spring out. It put a nice dent in the top of the fender. :censored

I thought I could just tie a rope to it and pull it since if is just in the fender well now. Glad the new springs will not need to be compressed to install.

How did it let go? The hooks slip off the coil?

What you always need to consider is a hook coming off or a set of upper or lower hooks suddenly twisting loose.

Some scarey stuff right there. I always wrap duct tape around the coil spring right where I plan on putting the hooks of the compressor. The tape helps keep the hooks from slipping and I also put a vice grip on one of the upper and lower hooks. Even with that, the compressor scares the crap out of me.

Remove the sway bar link from the lower control arm, you will then be able to pull the entire assembly down. You will either not need to use the compressor or greatly reduce the compression of the spring needed.

Damn Tom,
No matter what your bro' says about you, you do sometimes come up with some good ideas. :thu

That bites, glad to hear you didn't get banged up to bad. Hope the dent on the car isn't too bad and easily fixable without major issues.

Yeah, those compressors will take your head off. Dropping the sway bar helps reduce the use of the compressor. ALso some aftermarket stiffer springs will slide in there without the use of the compressor. Hope the dent works out OK. Better it than your head.

I think I will take the car to one of those dent fix places that work on hail dents. The dent is not bad, just enough for me to always notice it.

I had already removed the sway bar bushings. A fender bolt was holding the spring in so I removed the fender bold and the spring came right out. I have put in the new spring now and with the need for a compression tool. :thu

It went slow today since my right hand is real sore. Also got in the new tie rods and adjustment sleeve and the new sway bar bushings. Tonight I hope to get the shock back in, do a lube job and get the rest of the parts buttoned up.
