I have an '07 Explorer.

Recently put four new tires on it. Everything was fine when I left it at the air port to go to San Diego for a week.

When we got home I was telling the wife as soon as we got on the road leaving the air port something was fishy and felt like a tire was out of balance. Before we got home it was telling me there was a tire sensor error.

Took it to the tire store and in addition to the tires getting a little worn there is a tire sensor inside the tire that had come off the band that holds it. Apparently, why the tire was feeling out of balance is because the sensor was rolling around lose inside the tire like a shoe in the dryer type thing.

Finally got a quote on the parts to replace the sensor and band...$170

Anyone have an Explorer (or similar vehicle) and know if there is a way to simply disable the freaking tire sensors? I think I can tell if my tire is going flat on me simply by running it down the road...I've been driving without a "tire sensor" for over 20 years and suspect I could get by without one.

How long ago did you have the tires installed? Sounds to me like the installer may have knocked the sensor loose which would point to them having some liability. Go back and ask them about it. Most of the big chains have kits to rebuild or replace sensors that don't cost nearly what you are quoting.

The tires that were just replace were the tires that came on it when I bought it.

The quote is from the tire store ($118 for sensor and $52 for the band) and he claims he'll do it free as far as labor goes which probably means he just jacked up the parts cost.

How long before you felt the tire were they replaced is what he was asking. If it was within a couple days I would say your tire guy Effed it up.....

You can remove them all and place them in a PVC tube, sealed and pressurized to the tire pressure...then carry it in the vehicle. Works good.

If "fell off" inside the tire while the old tires were on the car. It had been sitting at the air port doing nothing for a week and started triggering the sensor on the way home from the air port.

Tire store replaced the tires after that and told me about the issue but they couldn't get a part price because it was a Sunday and I've been slow following up.

I would rather disable the darn things then spend money fixing something I don't want.

Worse case I am getting used to ignoring the light on the dash :shrug
