About a month ago, I picked up a new combo smoker/grill.

Decided on tuesday that it was time to use it. I picked up a 3lb brisket from the supermarket.

My wife being a diabetic,I decided to use Diet Dr Pepper instead of regular. I also also used a shot glass full of low sodium soy sauce.

What was left in the bowl after marinading overnight, I mixed some no-sugar pancake syrup, sweet and low,a touch of A1 steak sauce and some melted butter. I used this to spritz the meat during the 4 hour cook. I gave it a rub down with McCormick's Chicago style rub.

This was after the first 3 hours

I can't wait to play with this again. Going to try ribs next maybe sunday or monday.

Well....how was the flavor? What does the Dr. Pepper do to the taste or meat? That's a new one on my but my daughter loves Dr. P and would eat anything marinated in it!

It didn't overpower the meat like I thought it would. You could taste a hint of it in it. I'm not a Dr Pepper fan,Bit will use it again. It was very tender and moist.

I've been using Dr. Pepper and Coke as a marinade for game for years. It removes any gamey flavor and is good for lamb as well. I soak it over night and then bring the meat to room temp just before I want to cook it. I cook it low and slow and between the low and slow process and the coke/Dr. Pepper it is very tender and you can not taste the flavor of the beverage.

I also biol Brats in Ginger ale and onions, then I grill them. almost as good as doing it in beer. Well, for someone who doesn't drink and therefore doesn't have the stuff around it is easy and we like it.

There is something with the acids and sugar in the beverages that tenderizes the meat and removes the game flavor.

This is the way my grandmother used to do kielbasa. It come's out awesome.

Thats my problem since I had a stroke, and my wife doesn't drink, so no booze,So theres none in the house.

Hummm, maybe on monday while the ribs are on I'll boil some kielbasa on the gas grill to have for lunch.............

Same reason chicken grilled with a can of beer or soda in the butt comes out so good

WTF?? That stuff looks like the contents at the bottom of a porta potty.....after a retried bean cookoff at the local county fair.

Ok......just kidding. Wife says the soda tenderizes the meat. I said to her "that sounds so kinky"
