Should I upgrade my drum spindles, or use the disc spindles?

On my short list of projects this year are disc brakes. I've located some disc spindles & calipers for my 65. Curious what your thoughts are in going this route vs. an upgrade kit for my drum spindles. Any benefits one way or the other?

I'm not concerned with originality but I'm not interested in 17" wheels- so the 13" cobra kits are out.

I guess you need to understand that there is no such thing as a disc brake spindle on the 65 through 67's.

All the spindles were the same.

The disc brake calipers were mounted with brackets that fit on the spindle.

Stock spindles are all you need. Unless you plan on playing Dukes of Hazard and jumping off ramps they are plenty strong enough (there are some that will tell you to upgrade to a later, stronger spindle).

I'm running stock 66 spindles with the Lincoln big brakes on my car. After 6 years on the road and track, it's one of the few items that has NOT broken!

good info. now all i need is to find v8 spindles now..woot....i am actually looking a the 05-09 take-off gt brakes..not the cobra ones because of the price and that they are better than the granada set-up. but granada is an easier swap..

They're similar to what came on the Lincolns back in the late 60's. They're 4 piston and huge. Easy to change pads too, but they are way overkill for the street unless you get a killer price on a set. Shaun at Street or Track now sells the kit, but be prepared for sticker shock.

They will just fit inside 15" TTD's

Edit: I noticed that in these pics the rotors are on backwards. This was when I was finishing up the car back in 05.

I have the Granada spindles on my 67, but I understand they are not a good option for 65/66 cars. The geometry changed in 67 and that causes some weird stuff to happen on 65/66 Stangs. I recently had the opportunity to sit and visit with BobV and he told me all bout his experience on his GT350 clone. JonK is working on a set-up for using 05 and later V6 brakes on the original spindle...

It would help maybe if you gave some idea of a budget figure you had in mind. There are a lot of options with a lot of different price tags. You can get function fairly cheaply. For a bit more you can get better performance. Then you can start to get better performance and "cool" appearance...

I went the Wilwood route. Their new kits corrected the old issue that had their hubs moving the wheel out 1/2" or so. Works on a stock V8 spindle. Pretty too!

Be careful. There are some very early 1965 spindles that are drum specific. Casting numbers for drum spindles are:
C4ZA-3107(8)-A or B
C4ZA-3107(8)-D
C5DA-3107(8)-A or B

These are all before 9/10/64.

Thanks for all of help guys. What I really want is a T/A setup like Silverblue posted. I guess I figured if "disc spindles" were of some value or hard to come by, I should jump on them.
