A buddy asked me to look at his Civic for him. I do odd jobs for him like timing belts and oil changes. Other day he tells me the car is clunking at around 25 mph. This time he asked me to do a drain and fill on the transmission.
I'm not sure what it is, but take it for a drive. It starts fine, revs fine (not engine), goes around corners fine (not drive axles), and as I'm accelerating I feel the transmission try to shift, then tone of the revs change as I feel the clutches slipping, and then BAM it slams into 2nd.
I pop the hood to check the fluid and find this...
It looks and smells like burnt old motor oil. More of a dark brown in color, no indication that it was ever pink.
I'm going to refer him to the guy who rebuilds my transmissions for me, and no, I'm not going to do a drain and fill for it. No point wasting the new fluid, he might as well drive it as-is until it finally quits and he has to have it rebuilt. If it was my car, well, first of all I'd never wait for the fluid to get that color, but if it was my car, I'd have it rebuilt right now. I suspect this guy isn't going to want to spend the money until he has to.
Anybody recommend anything different?
