don't ever think about doing this...

if you ever get the bright idea to recover a lecarra steering wheel... don't!
actually, it isn't too bad if you have alot of time & cast iron fingers to pull the stitches tight every few mins. the hand stitching is very time consuming & pulling that nylon thread tight has my fingers almost raw. worst part is, this is my "practice" wheel. i still have another to do when this one is finished. :cry

good part is, i'm almost finished with this one & have only poked myself with a needle once :vic

A little blood sweat and tears is worth it when the end result is awsome... that looks great! ... I don't think I'd have the patience to try it.

WOW, looks better than the originals!! Where did you buy that much patience? I am in need of some new stuff.

thanks guys! my patience is actually a by product of the fact that i am cheap! :lol as a few of you already know, i hate paying outlandish prices for something that i can do or make myself. in many cases over the years, i've bought the book to learn how, the tools & materials needed & completed the job for less than what it would cost to farm it out. needless to say, i don't want to do many of these!! i emailed lecarra to inquire about getting the wheel recovered or buying a replacement cover for the one i'm going to use & finally got a response that they could recover or sell me the cover & the price was $60. i emailed again & asked if the $60 was the price for a cover or the cost for them to do it & never received a reply. i figured that with the cost of shipping both ways, i would be in at least $100, so set out to do it myself. it worked out pretty good price wise. i'll have $65 dollars invested & have two lecarra wheels complete with horn buttons & three mounting hubs.

on another note, i made some adjustments to the pattern after doing the first one & the second wheel has been a little easier :)

Nice little Mark 9 wheel. How many times did it take you to get the pattern close for the first one?

i took measurements off of what was left of the original cover on the wheel pictured above & made that cover. after installing it, i figured out what adjustments needed to be made on the cover for the second wheel & it worked out alot better. i guess the leather on that original cover shrunk slightly over the years & it was as hard as plastic. i just finished up the cover for the second wheel which will be installed on my car today. it was MUCH easier than the first to install, but still a royal pain in the ass... if i had to recover more of these, i would make up a jig to hold the wheel while stitching.

here's the one going on the car:

Steve, next time I put a hole in the top of my head from ramming it into the LCA mount I'm coming to see you instead of the ER...I bet you won't even mess up the part in my hair.
