Dot 3 or Dot 5?

Currently Gert uses dot 5. The '68 mustang dual bowl MC I bought says use dot 3 on the lid. Can I just continue to use dot 5 even though the MC says to use 3? :shrug

I'd use DOT 3 for the street. 5 is more prone to absorb moisture....IIRC.

Yes, you can use DOT5 in the new MC. If you change from DOT5 to 3, you'll need to flush all of your brake lines several times. DOT5 does not lift paint like DOT3 does, and for those of us with occasional drivers, it is a great solution.

I have had DOT 5 in my 65 for 19 years and it works fine.

No matter what type of brake fluid you use you need to flush and refill every few years.

Not having brake fluid that eats paint is a real huge advantage.

phew! Good to know because the idea of having to flush everything to change fluid type would have sucked. :hide I think I'll stick to using dot 5.
Thanks guys!

I will! I was hoping I would have gotten in changed by now, but with moving, the holidays, two of my husbands grandparents being very ill... haven't gotten around to it yet. Gert is still sitting outside with a car cover until we can clean out enough room in the garage to fit her in it. Not in any big rush though. I drove her for months and enjoyed it and now it's time to take her apart for months ... years? LOL
