Drive shaft yoke...

On my '66 302/C4 with its current 8" peg leg, is it possible to get a yoke to fit that is of the same style as the newer Mustangs? I have thought about this for towing purposes. Traveling with the RV and a car trailer is difficult when it comes to various parks because they don't have room for parking of a trailer. I am looking at going to a tow dolly. This is where the newer style yoke would help. It would be easy to unbolt the flange type yoke without worrying about u-joints coming apart and such. I could tow the '66 backwards but not sure how that would work either. I don't mind sliding under the car to attach the flanged drive shaft yoke. And yes, the drive shaft would need modded also.

Not that I've removed very many fox-body driveshafts, but the ones I have done were all more difficult than a vintage one.

On a vintage one, when you take it out, just put a wrap of electrical tape around the 2 exposed caps, and they will not go anywhere.

Pete,

I assume that you've used a tow dolly before?

I own both a tow dolly and a car trailer. While there is more involved with loading a car onto the car trailer.... and it leaves a much larger footprint while not in use, I'd consider carefully switching from a car trailer to a tow dolly.

With a car on a car dolly, it is damn near impossible to back up. If you're towing a car on a dolly and find yourself in a situation where you have to back up more than 5 feet, you'll be screwed. The car dolly "jack-knifes" almost instantly when attempting any kind of reversing operation.

It's mainly for this reason that I'll use my car trailer and not the dolly.

My car dolly just sits around the property and gets loaned out to friends that have a busted car they need to move .

Yep, I have removed both the flanged type and the older style shafts. The one problem is with the older style, there is a chance of a cup falling (we all have had that happen I bet) and that is not workable when pulling into an RV park and having to park.

Tow dolly vs trailer.......many RV parks do not have space for a trailer, and some not much for a dolly. Backing up is not a big deal.......just watch what you do going forward. Not saying I would never have to back, but it is one of the hazards. I have a trailer now and am lucky because this park has large spaces. Most are tight for a large RV with room for one car.

I have towed just about everything out there and towed with a lot of vehicle types so it does not bother me to tow. Maybe I should sell both cars and the trailer and buy something to tow with all 4 wheels on the ground..........Gotta start traveling this coming year now.

My daughter lives here in Panama City. I can leave anything in her care with no worries. Right now, one car stays, one goes on the trailer, the trike gets put where I can fit it. Not a real problem.

My preference would be to sell both cars and the trailer. Buy a '66 Vert, V8, 4+ sp. 100% done, and an extended tow dolly I have seen that allows a bit of storage in front of the car for the trike. I would think that I could tow that car with out removing the drive shaft due to it being manual. Everything I read says it should be no problem plus my past experiences. Then.....hit the road from about April to Oct., and land in Panama City Oct. thru April.

Problem........wife has it stuck in her head that with only one vehicle, we need a new one with a warranty in case it breaks. Ahhhhggggggg....... I can repair anything that goes wrong with the '66, plus for about a $10,000 price difference for a new one will pay for a lot of work. Plus, we will not do any long distance in any vehicle except the RV due to her med. situation. If we went new, the only thing I would want to get looks like the '10 Ford Explorer Sport Trac 4X4. Four wheel so it can be towed flat, no trailer/dolly.

I just informed the wife that all of our last new vehicles ('93/'96/'01/'07now what) were purchased just as the last one went out of warranty, be it extended or regular. She had not realized that.

I kind of dislike the idea of being out of the classic Mustang world but life is full of changes. Did tour motorcycling for 32 years, over lapped with off roading for 33 years, doing Mustang restoration for 10 years but restoring old Fords/cars since high school, now Rv full time and things may change.

Sorry for the long winded post........................

hit the road from about April to Oct.

That's what I thought RV'ing was all about.... pulling up roots every two weeks in search of greener pastures and better weather.

I think your plan sounds like a good one, but if it were me, I'd ditch the classic Mustang and keep the more reliable newer one and continue to trade up into a newer vehicle to continuously maintain a full warranty. The longer you live, the less likely you'll want to be fixing an old Mustang on the side of the road.

RVing is traveling for sure. The wife's medical has stabilized some so we can now so the plans are in the making......

I kind of agree with the not wanting to wrench the old cars as time goes by and then again, I do enjoy it. Either way, at this time, I would have to sell both as the old and new are autos....and not towable with a dolly. I would prefer to tow with all four on the ground since I have to get a new vehicle anyway.

I do enjoy it.

If you hadn't have been banned from the VMF.... you could RV across the country fixing everyones broke-ass cars.

You have a smaller population to choose from here....

.... but you could start with Statesville/Hickory NC and give Duane a hand.

............and once I hit the west coast, I could sit and laugh at one certain build.......

Well, I think someone that lives close should track it down and take pictures..............
