Driveline How short is too short?

On a upcoming project I may have a drive shaft that is only 24". Still trying to decide if I need to go independent rear suspension but I figure this would be heavier than a 8" solid. What's your ideas?

I would say as long as the u-joint angles are within range, the shorter drive shaft will deliver better torque as less twist possible.

As for which rear end, I think that depends on the use/type of vehicle you are working on. More info might help.

A 24" driveshaft will not allow much vertical movement of the diff before you are at the maximun accepted angle of the u-joint. So, an IRS maybe the way to go.

Dodge Vipers had very short driveshafts, so I don't see this as being an issue.

Example:

Dodge vipers have IRS, so the rear diff moves very little in relation to the trans - maybe a quarter inch or so. Much different than a live axle that has to move several inches at least.
