Driveshaft yoke engagement?

How much is too much of the yoke shaft exposed? For my T56 conversion, I'm looking into the possibility of using an FMS aluminum driveshaft made for a Fox body. Depending on if I am able to move my motor back an inch, it may get to be too much of the yoke exposed. If I'm able to move the engine back an inch using the Ron Morris drop engine mounts, I'll have 2" of the yoke shaft exposed. That is the max I anticipate being able to move the motor back, but it may end up that I can only squeeze 1/2" shift which would make it 2.5" exposed. I know you want some of the yoke exposed for suspension travel, but is this too much?

To put some numbers to it, with the stock location of the motor and none of the yoke exposed I'll need a 48.5" driveshaft c/c of u-joints. The FMS Fox driveshaft is 45.5". I've found that the stock Cobra aluminum driveshaft is 43.5", which unfortunately is too short. I had high hopes in using the Cobra driveshaft, but oh well.

Thanks!

IIRC you only want 3/4 to 1 inch of play in the yoke to tail stock area. Too much yoke sticking out will cause vibration or worse.

Yes, you're still going to be an inch short, even with moving the engine back, and 2 inches short without. Look at using a 2wd Xcab 5 spd 98+ Ranger shaft. It's aluminum and can be cut down to your final target dimension.

Yes.

The last 2 cars I put together both got new AL driveshafts from Inland Empire (Shaun's prices are much better). Part of the process for determining the length of the custom shafts is to measure allowing ~0.75" for the yoke to fully seat onto the trans tailshaft. So.... you would fully seat the yoke onto the trans. tailshaft..... slide the yoke rearward 0.75"...... and then measure to determine the custom length of the driveshaft.

Thanks guys. I figured it'd be too much. I got the T56 mocked up over the weekend, now I just need to get a slip yoke so I can get the accurate measurement for the driveshaft. I'll be starting a thread soon about my T56 conversion. I still have a ton of parts I have to buy yet, so it won't be a "quick" conversion :sad
