Drywoodus Termitus

Well, I bit the bullet and had the house treated today for drywood termites.

I had been battling them myself but basically gave up a year ago and got some quotes. I had a local company use termidor and borate sprayed in the attic and in the walls where damage was known, as well as they bored 1/8" holes in the exterior walls (between the studs).

The crew came in at 9am and were gone by 2pm. I'm considering getting on the maintenance plan where you pay a fee each year and they treat for free (you're paying) if they find anything. They have to re-treat the home in 5 years (at 1/2 price).

They did a good job and it's hard to tell where they drilled the holes (I had touch up paint for the outside, and they used white inside).

Anyone else have some stories to tell regarding termites?

Can't say anything about termites, but ants are my problem. We keep having them get in the kitchen. Last time, they came in from around the dish washer, so I went to sealing everything in sight. Well, they found another way in, this time behind the fridge. So this weekend, I'll be busy fixing my fence, possibly replacing shingles, and tracking down ants.
Oh the joys of home ownership.

We gave a mouse, or mice , in the kitchen. I have set glue traps and bait trays. Hoping to catch Mickey or Minnie tonight.

Bought our house in Va Beach in March 2005. Termite inspection gave it a clean bill of health. First week we were in the house I gutted the kitchen and found live termites. Called the inspector and he said "well, they could have came in after the inspection." I said bullshit, called another company to come take a look. They looked, told me they have been there awhile. I said, "what about this inspection report?" Turns out the guy I called was the local termite expert who handles claims against other termite companies during disputes. I sent a demand letter to the company who gave me the inspection for a refund and got it. And then I hired the second guy to do a treatment and I've been paying for the warranty since then. 6 years and no termites.

we get ants every spring. spray the outside, put down traps. It's all you can do.

Try Demon WP for ants. (CYPERMETHRIN)
Termidor is so effective; I have been told if termites return, it wasn't applied correctly.

Ants are a PIA. You have to get the colony. Put down something they will take back. I've found Sevin dust to work pretty well. Put it around the house where you think they may be entering and look around outside for the group. They love to bed in mulch areas under rocks and such. If you have any landscaping bricks, pavers, etc go kick a few up and see if you can find 'em.

Mice and rats are my nemesis. As long as I don't leave the garage door open I'm OK, but leave that thing open for a few hours or all night...Katy bar the door.

I can't leave vehicles outside or they become nests overnight. I've had the alligator snaps outside under my grill since Jan and caught one mouse a day for weeks until I got them all. Now I get one a week if that. It's a constant battle that'll never end.
Had a giant rat in the garage last fall that the Owls wouldn't even touch. I had to buy a GIANT snap trap to get that mutha. Took a week, but he finally got nailed. It was just a little over a foot long!

Termidor - that's what they used and it is indeed effective. I suspect I'm going to get on the pay plan and be done.

Regarding mice, my father in law's place had mice in his range/oven. There was a mother and about 8 little buggers.

For ants, I have had them in the kitchen before - they usually start looking in the house in June - looking for water. It was great to open the cabinet and see the peanut butter jar completely covered in ants - they had thought they scored so well, even some drones were out of the colony feasting!

I have successfully used those type of traps that have then take poison back to the colony.

One more thing about ants is that they are enemies of termites and will kill off the termite colony if they can - so if you've got them, you prob don't have any termites! Lesser of two evils maybe!

Every spring I get a bunch of Stanford hardball coeds hanging around my house. Have yet to figure out how to get rid of them so I just let them hang.
