Dumb tire question

I picked up a staple in one of my tires. It has a slow leak. I took it to the local firestone store to gave it patched. Tire store dude looked at it and said that it was " illegal" to patch two holes in a tire within two inches of each other, ( since it is a staple, there are two prongs, each about the size of a small finish nail.) He was more than happy to offer a discount on a set of new firestone tires. Was this bullshart about the tire patch?

Yep, heard and seen the same thing. Most of that comes from the tire manufacturer as recommendations. If you really want it patched.....go to a used tire sales place or small tire shop. It is a safety standard I believe. But then again.....I could be mistaken having never seen it in writing.

The patches they use these days are round patches with stems. They go at it from the inside. The patch area limits how close you can place 'em. Buy a rope plug kit and plug the holes. Ask around though. Some shops will trim the patch area to allow both to fit.

Duane is correct - plug it. I've plugged staple holes before on my work truck, and gone another 30k with no problems - even heavily loaded.

Wouldn't do it with tires that were tracked or saw extended high speed, but for street, it'll be fine.

From a guy that has to get tires patched on a weekly basis..........sounds like bullsplat to me. They're just trying to sell you more tires.

I buy all my tires from a local guy in town and because I live out in the sticks, down miles of gravel roads, I constantly get flats. The inside of my tires (except the track tires) look like a collage of patches. The only time I replace them is if a rock rips into the sidewall (which does happen occasionally).

I have the tire plug stuff just for emergencies.
