Have been selling some stuff on flea bay and just now have I decided to start looking at the various fees. 9% for ebay and 3% for paypal ?

I mean :wtf Why isn't things like this free? This is America! We deserve free services! :guns

I had not sold on ebay for a while. I sold some parts a couple weeks ago and noticed they added a fee on shipping. I have always charged exact chipping cost. Now I am in the hole doing that. :guns

Yep and to top it off I am noticing the last ~ year things on Ebay are moving much more slowly if you are trying to sell something. Doesn't seem to be near the customer traffic there used to be.

The boys have a spare catcher's helmet and some Pokemon cards for sale on my account right now. A few people looking but not much in the way of watchers or bidders.

Just a guess but I think the shipping fee is being added now to discourage the sellers who abuse the system and try to avoid the sale fees. As you know Ebay gets a percentage fee based on the final sales price. What people had started doing was listing items for a couple of bucks, but then listing the shipping a 30 or 40 dollars. Ebay tried to police this awhile back, but I can't see how they could do that due to the large number of listings. I guess we all pay extra now due to some tight wad cheatin' bastages! :rant

I used to sell a lot of stuff on ebay, but I haven't had much luck there lately.
The fees are getting to high to sell small $ parts.

Meg Whitman spent a fortune on her run for the Governor's office last year. I wouldn't be surprised if she may be passing along that "expense" :part

The fees are outrageous; that's why I don't e-bay or use PayPal as the norm. For my harness business, having PayPal automatically convert foreign currency into US Dollars is worth the fee, as my local banks are clueless about handling foreign checks. Thus, the only time I use PayPal is for foreign transactions or extremely urgent payments.

FYI, if the buyer designates the transaction as a personal transfer and the money comes from their PayPal account or a bank account, there's no fee.

Yes, but so often they forget and I have to eat the fees.

Seems the only thing eBay is really great for anymore is buying off brand NIB cheap Chinese products, shipped from Hong Kong. Want a knockoff brand DVD VIdeo Head Unit for 175 dollars? eBay is your place! The buying and selling of old crap in your house has fallen to craigs list, which sucks because they intentionally built the site to keep locals "local" making it hard for you to search nation wide, and makes niche selling and purchasing difficult (like mustang parts, for example.)

I think there's a hole in the market that eBay has left, and someone else could jump in and fill it. The problem is eBay has great brand name recognition, so making a competing product would be a challenge. But I think someone is going to make an auction site built to be like the ebay of old, and with policies and procedures intentionally built into place to keep the guys who basically just use eBay to import and sell NIB crap from China.

at least I hope someone does it.

Concur with all. Used to sell a lot, was a power seller for awhile. Realized I was making 10%, eBay was making 12%, and it wasn't worth my time to make them more money than I was making. Looks like the fees have only gotten worse.
I understand the shipping thing, I always charged actual shipping and couldn't compete with the guys selling cheaper with higher shipping. Customer could pay same amount but other guy had lower fees. Not fair.

The deals don't seem to be there anymore. Used parts that should be 25 are listed at 75. Not worth it to even look.
