EFI crank/no fire

Just when you think you have it all working well....the darn thing bites you!

The boy drove the car yesterday with no problems, parked it and went to restart it several hours later and nothing. I checked and it appears we are no longer getting any spark. Any EFI experts out there have any direction to look? I replaced the coil, no go. Checked voltage to the coil and all is good. I took the TFI into Autozone and they put it on their machine and said it was good. Short of replacing the entire ignition system, I am at a loss. May be more distributor problems?????

oh come now....no EFI people around?

I did a bit of research and am on the path to fix it, hopefully. When I do figure it out I will update this for the next poor soul searching for an answer!

How did you check for spark?

I just slapped the inductive timing light on it and could not get it to flash during cranking.....typically it does.

I just bookmarked this for my own reference... seems like it's pretty thorough.

As far as testing the TFI module, I've had GM HEI modules test out fine but still run like crap, it may be worth trying a new TFI if you don't find anything wrong in the wiring.

That looks to be a great reference. I used this one last night to check the components http://sbftech.com/index.php/topic,588.0.html so far it all points to the pick up in the distributor. $18 bucks for the pick up, 2 hours trying to get the distributor gear off the shaft. Should put it together tonight and see if I am any closer.

Problem solved!

After changing out the PIP pickup in the distributor, the car started right up. There was no warning signs that it was going out and quite a job to change it. I think I will continue my search for a good aftermarket unit.

its the small victories. I am amazed that when I do a web search how many people have problems, ask for help on forums and never respond to what the problem was. I try to chronicle my problems start to finish so the next guy is not left wondering!

I'd guess a large number of those who never report back the solutions are too embarrassed to admit their findings. Lots of "problems" are usually caused by the same person seeking help. You're right though, if more people did report back those posts would hold much more value for others.
