electrical question (non-automotive)

Should be an easy one for you guys: I'm replacing the light switches in my house and there are two switches that control the same two hall lights. There's the standard two black wires to each switch and also a red wire. I thought that this was simply another hot wire and hooked it up as such to the new switch, but then the other switch wouldn't work. What kind of switch do I need to get?
