Engine bay width 69/70 vs 67/68 -Exhaust manny to steering box clearance

Well the jury is still out on the manifold issue of mine. Meanwhile am I correct that the engine bay width of a 69/70 is wider than that of a 67/68 which might create more space between the exhaust manifold and steering box on the 69/70?

As I have said using the 70 manifold in Shag it sure seems like the exhaust intermediate pipe is going to run very close to the steering box thus the reasoning for this post.

Re: Engine bay width 69/70 vs 67/68 -Exhaust manny to steering box clearance

I think swapping the 69/70 engine bay into Shag is just too much work Craig, I would just go hydraulic clutch or run headers..... You think finding a DS, standard, clevo exhaust manifold is hard, try finding a nice 69/70 engine bay....

Silly boy, I'm only referring the 69/70 to compare the space between the block and steering box.

The only difference between a '65 engine bay and the '70 (including all years in between) is the shape of the shock towers and the length from the firewall to the radiator support.

We took the Monte-carlo bar and export brace out of my son's '65 and put it into his '69. They fit perfectly.

When I had the stock exh manifolds on my 70, there was only about a 1/2inch gap from the steering box.
The pipe that was connected to the stock manifold had a real sharp bend to clear the clutch linkage.

For your clutch eql bar question, are you using the bar for a 351C?
They are bent differantly from the 289/302/351W bars.

I'm using a repopped one that is reinforced and it even clears the Lakewood bell, Close but it clears it.

I don't know if I buy that. A 390, 351 Cleveland and 429/460 will not fit a 65/66 with the shock towers still in it. I also put a 66 Shelby front anti swaybar on my 67 and it is narrower than the 67. The rear axle widths are also different which makes me think the track width is wider in front as well. Maybe where the MC bar fits is close enough but the rest has got to be different.

Aren't the '67 lower control arms different than the other years? Are they shorter/longer or is it just how the strut rods bolt to them?

here is the 70 frame chart

and the 67...

it's the strut rods. They are straight vs angled

A 351C fits in any year. The big blocks won't fit because of the shape of the shock towers. Cut out the shock towers of a '65, put in a Mustang II suspension, and you can fit a 460 in the bay with ease.

The tops of the shock towers have the identical measurements from the one shock tower to the the other, and from the shock tower to the fire wall, wether it's a '65 or it's a '70. I don't know enough about the '71-'73 to say if they are the same or not. The difference is that the '65/'66 have a much more sloping shock tower that won't let a big block fit between them. The '67/later shock towers are more straight up and down to allow for the big blocks.

so the shock tower (UCA) and LCA mounting is all that changes for the track width?
65/66 = 56"
67/68 = 58" and
69/70 = 61.5" [front], 61" [rear]
